A 4 day short break holiday including a husky safari, a morning feeding reindeer and a night time Northern Lights snowmobile safari. You’ll stay at the Wilderness Lodge Korpikartano in the remote wilderness of Menesjarvi, the heartland of the Sami people where you can hear ‘the sound of the silence’. You’ll also can find out with a full suite of thermal clothing, snow shoes, toboggans, kick sleds & skis so as to enjoy as much fun in the snow as you have time for. And of course the private use of a sauna to relax.
It’s hard to imagine anywhere or anything as authentically redolent of Sapmi, and Sami culture, as wife & husband Anne Harju & Timo Halonen’s Korpikartano Lodge in the village of Menesjarvi (pop 47). Converted from a primary school that closed in 2005 the Lodge’s two separate buildings are set slightly apart with one being the ‘main’ one housing the restaurant, reception and small sitting room and the other a dormitory with lake view rooms. Each building has its own sauna and our rooms overlooking the frozen lake, have a private WC/shower; hairdryer, TV/Radio and been furbished in a simple pristine style with pine clad walls and homely fabrics. In the surrounding grounds there is a glazed roof Kota where you can wait around an open fire for the Aurora to show; snow shoes, kick sleds, toboggans and skis to use as and when you please. Above all the Korpikartano is Anne & Timo and Anne & Timo are the Korpikartano. It’s their special hospitality in quite literally the middle of nowhere that makes this a very, very special place.
fly from London Heathrow or Manchester via Helsinki to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland. Meet your driver/guide at the airport and transfer to the Hotel Korpikartano, collect your thermal clothing and settle into your room. Take supper in the hotel and afterwards walk down to the edge of the lake for a possible first sighting of the Northern Lights.
after breakfast meet Sami Reindeer Herder Petri Mattus from whose farmhouse on the edge of Menesjarvi you’ll travel on the back of his snowmobile hay sledge out into the forest to a clearing where he’ll unload the hay shouting ‘oyyyyyyyaiii….oyyyyy-ayiii’ in the rhythmic fashion of a Joik or Sami song poem . Gradually you’ll hear what sounds like raindrops falling on canvas which become a clicking sound as the reindeer come closer to feed and with luck right up to your sledge. Take sooty coffee with Petri whilst he tells you of his daily life and that of his father and grandfather before him. Return to the hotel for a warm up and buffet lunch. Afterwards your local guide will kit you out with snow shoes, kick sleds and skis, teach you how to handle each and where you can go in the adjacent forest or on the lake to enjoy the white wilderness. Before your early supper, Timo hosts an informal aurora workshop in which he passes on his ‘tricks of the trade’ for photographing the Aurora, which you can then put to good use on a guided hunt on snow shoes for the Northern Lights.
set off to meet Tinja Myllyangas known locally as the dog whisperer; Tinja has a special talent with dogs and keeps just 40 or so in her kennels. There are black & white ones, white & black ones, brown & white ones, all sorts: every one with their own name. After a short handling tuition set off mushing your own team in the enchanting wilderness of Inari, the spiritual homeland of the Sami people. As the dog’s excited barking subsides the only sound is of your sled’s runners slicing through the snow and the muted padding of their paws. Return to the hotel for a warm up and buffet lunch. If you haven’t thawed your bones out with a sauna before, today will be your last chance which you shouldn’t turn down: there’s just nothing to beat it as a way of winding down both mind and body. Afterwards get ready for the supersonic Jeremy Clarkson way of riding through the forest to find the best aurora spots – by snowmobile. Scoot off along soft snow trails, frozen ice lakes and along moonlit trails with (hopefully, hopefully, hopefully!!) the Northern Lights overhead.
