Your Adventure

Hunting the Aurora across tundra plains; mushing your own team of huskies in Inari in Finnish Lapland the spiritual home of the Sami (Lapp) people christened Enari by author Philip Pullman, and a sort of glamping overnight with like minded people in a newly built boutique lodge.

The Glamping Bit

a few years back Jouko and Mari Lappalainen bought the local primary school and tuned in into a Wilderness Lodge which has become something of a haven for Aurora hunters. The combination of Mari’s taste in décor and Jouko’s tireless workmanship (he handcrafted the bar himself) has given the place a deserved reputation for authenticity, hospitality and Aurora. Their latest thing is the Sarmi Eco Lodge.

Nellim Wilderness Lodge

We first met Mari Lappalainen in London dressed in her snow white gakti with appliquéd collar held in place by a pewter clasp talking about how she and her husband had begun to renovate a disused primary school in the village of Nellim. That was in London and later that year one of our number went to Nellim, which is in Inari close to Petsamo on the Finnish/Russian border, to see what she and her husband Juoko were up to. And what that was, was painstakingly converting the school into a home for travellers and doing it in spades so that today the Nellim Wildreness Lodge has a deservedly top of the range reputation for authenticity and charm infused with family warmth. The Lodge consists of 3 buildings facing in on each other around what was once the children’s playground: there are 22 wood clad, simply furnished twin and single rooms with private WC/shower decorated with fabrics personally chosen by Mari; 4 apartments also with private WC/shower and configured with varying numbers of bedrooms capable of accommodating differing family sizes along with private log cabins in the grounds surrounding the hotel. The hotel’s principle public area has a small lounge seating area, recently renovated and extended restaurant and pine wood bar, hand crafted by Jouko himself. Outside there is a Safari House with kick sleds, toboggans and skis free for you to use; a log fired sauna whose hot, sap filled air provides the perfect warm up after a day’s adventures and a traditional Kota. Immediately to one side of the main building are the husky kennels behind which a pathway leads down through the pines to a frozen lake where there is always an open fire to warm you up whilst spotting for the Northern Lights.

1st Day UK – Finnish Lapland

fly scheduled airline to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, meet up with your guide and transfer to Nellim. Settle into your room, have supper and afterwards take a walk down the incline leading to the lake where you’ll find a wind break and an open fire to keep your bones from chilling whilst seeing if you can catch your first sight of the Northern Lights.

2nd Day Snowshoeing & the Sarmi Lodge

have a lie in before breakfast and then set off by snowmobile sleigh along a snow carpeted trail leading to the Sarmi Lodge . Here your guide will fill you in on how the place runs before lunch ( a certain amount of self-help is involved) after which you snow shoe or ski in the forest surrounds (this is an easy peasy afternoon if you’re reasonably day to day fit). Afterwards you can curl up in the lodge with a book or each other and take a sauna before dinner which you eat round an open fire. Now its time for the point of it all: an aurora spotting evening by Lake Sarmi at one of Jouko's special spots round an open fire with hand warming hot, sooty coffee.

3rd Day Husky Mushing

after breakfast transfer back to the mother Lodge as it where, and spend the morning watching the day go by down by the lake or in the forest and texting home your Aurora images tagged ‘eat your heart out’. After lunch meet up with a local musher and her pack of Alaskan huskies and after some tution mush two to a sleigh alongside the shoreline of Lake Inari. Later after supper you might just catch a valedictory view of the Northern Lights a few yards down from th Lodge by the lake.
