A 4/5 day short break in Luosto, an area of Finnish Lapland, where you’ll have snow fun during the day spotting for the Northern Lights in the evenings and a night in a glass Igloo. Base camp for your stay is the Hotel Aurora a boutique style hotel and with all these fancy rooms. You’ll also enjoy great grub with dishes fashioned around forest and lak. There is aslo private sauna for you.
With its eponymous name the Hotel Aurora is a bit of a give way. Built on 3 levels with all 28 of its rooms facing north, just 15 meters from the edge of the forest and with an aurora personal guest alarm system linked to the Sodankyla Geophysical Laboratory this is a perfect spot for Northern Lights aficionados. Rooms are styled with russet brown fabrics and furnishings, wooden floors and tongue and groove walls; 12 have a slate fronted open fire stove. Larger (28m2) ones similarly have an open fire and come with a separate twin bedded room in addition to a sofa bed. All have, of course, a private WC/shower, TV, WI-FI and personal aurora alarm phone. The hotel’s small restaurant with its open kitchen and lava stone grill turns out dishes using local ingredients such as arctic char, venison from reindeer and forest berries. The lobby area and bar has a granite tiled floor, comfort seating, Lappish bric a brac pretty much everywhere and is the hotels focal point for TLC which manager Jari Vartanen doles out in big gloops.
A cut above the average laavu, the tripodal tent used by the migratory Sami, Luosto's glass laavu's come toastily heated with all mod cons. Comparable in styling & comfort to the hotel's rooms proper each comes with its own shower/WC, entrance hallway, wrap round privacy curtains, double bed and glazed walls & ceiling. Probably (for the moment) the luxiest way to see the Northern Lights; just by gazing up at the night sky.
Fly Norwegian DIRECT to Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, transfer to Luosto & the Hotel Aurora, check in to your room and take supper in the hotel’s lava stone grill restaurant. After your meal take a guided nocturnal snowshoe trek in search of the Northern Lights fortified en-route by copious quantities of hot chocolate.
After breakfast take the safari of your choice picked from our portfolio: from two to four hour ones, all day or overnight hardcore ones by snowmobile, reindeer or husky. We also have guides to take you ice fishing, snow shoeing or cross country skiing and whilst you can book on the spot it’s best to confirm at least the ones you really want to do beforehand to ‘avoid disappointment’ as the ‘speak your weight ‘machine voices might have it. And no we don’t speak with forked tongue – we have a Peter Jones ‘never knowingly undersold’ commitment on safari prices. For R & R at the end of the day you can chill out with a sauna in the privacy and comfort of your own room before supper before an evening Aurora spotting in a Kota (available during 5 day stay on Wednesdays only).
After a leisurely breakfast why not combine two safaris in one by snowmobiling there and back to a husky kennels, After a short safety briefing & driving lesson scoot off through the forest along soft snow trails, over frozen ice lakes and mogul littered tundra. Modern 4 stroke snowmobiles with their low centre of gravity whether Bombardier Ski-Doos, Lynx or Polaris, are easy and safe to drive, controlled for acceleration and braking from the handlebar and have a 'kill switch' to shut down the engine in emergencies. When you arrive at the kennels the musher will show you how to balance on a dog sled, use the brake, steer and generally handle your own dog team. Whilst all this is going down the cacophony of wooing, singing and howling will reach a near deafening pitch only to subside the moment your team pulls away; then all you’ll hear is the slicing of the runners cutting through the snow. On your return, warm up with some sooty coffee by an open fire before snowmobiling back to Lousto. (available during 5 day stay on Wednesdays only). In the evening take supper and then retire to your glass Igloo to sleep under the stars, or at least under glass under the stars and hopefully watch the Northern Lights dancing hand in hand with Cassiopeia. Sleep the sleep of children.

Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holdays.
The ultimate ATV for use on snow & ice, the snowmobile is the supersonic Jeremy Clarkson way of getting around in Sapmi, and riding one through the forest is just about as boy's own racer as it gets.
