A short 5 day break overnighting at the Harriniva Wilderness Lodge and husky mushing with a pick of the pack from Lapland's biggest dog sled centre, snowmobiling in the Pallas-Yllas National Park and reindeer sledding under The Northern Lights. You'll learn how to handle a larchwood sledge and a team of 6 dogs, speed scoot through the forest Jeremy Clarkson style and contrastingly meander by reindeer across a blanket of snow laid down in the forest. Plus have the chance to 'design your own adventure' for a day or even take a wilderness cooking course (watch out The Hairy Bikers). And all this leavened with the legendary hospitality of Harriniva's Family Pietikainen:Kyosti (Kopi), Maria, Niina & Antti.
Alongside the frozen Muonio River marking the border between Finnish and Swedish Lapland sits the Pietikainen family’s Harriniva Wilderness Lodge. Many moons and auroras ago, when co-owner Pietikainen Pere was a young man, Harriniva was nothing more than a pit stop for travellers on their way to Nordkapp. Over the years though, its morphed into a Wilderness Lodge with a riverside colony of 28 cabins overlooking the river, and a home for 400 Siberian Huskies in what has become Lapland's largest husky breeding kennels. The lodge’s rooms are all clad in light pine & locally quarried granite, simply furnished with handicraft fabrics and fitted with a private WC/Shower. 46 of them are configured for 3 or 4 guests (with 3 beds or twin beds plus bunk beds respectively), 6 are larger ones with a sitting area and private sauna, and 12 are apartment style with a kitchenette & children’s sleeping gallery. In the internal public areas there is a sitting area, a bar serving soft drinks, snacks and coffee/tea 24/7, a licensed bar often with informal local entertainment, and 3 restaurant areas collectively termed Kuukkeli whilst outside there is a traditional Kota restaurant. And everywhere, any when and all the time there is someone, generally a Pietikainen or a F of the F, to look after you just as Pietikainen Pere did way back when.
fly to Kittila in Finnish Lapland via Helsinki, transfer to Muonio and the Harriniva Wilderness Lodge before checking in to your selected room. Take supper in Kuukkeli, the hotel's tripartite restaurant, and afterwards walk down to the river bank for an inaugural sighting of the Northern Lights (possibly, hopefully, maybe!)
after a bit of a lie in and breakfast, take a wander along the river bank as far as the bridge and cross over the tullitie to Sweden (its about a 1200 kms there and back). In the early afternoon walk down to the kennels to meet up with your guide who will walk you round intriducing you to a few of more than 400 dogs in residenc at any one time. Then, after a short tuition in sled handling, set off two to a sled for a 2 hour mush through the surrounding snow draped fells swapping driver and passenger positions half way. Later chill out your bones with a sauna before dinner and a dash outside if the alarm for the aurora should go off.
after breakfast its a 'design your own day' doing what you will from just hanging out, snow shoeing, cross country skiing or even Harriniva's wilderness cooking school!! In the evening settle on to reindeer sled and snuggle back as your graceful reindeer gently pulls you through the snow in search of the Northern Lights. Take supper back at the Lodge
today it's time for snowmobiling: riding one through the forest is just about as boy's own racer as it gets. Harriniva's Ski-Doo with its low centre of gravity is easy and safe to drive, controlled for acceleration and braking from the handle bar with a 'kill switch' to shut down the engine in emergencies. Scooting through the forest along soft snow trails, over frozen ice lakes and mogul littered tundra is a magic way of enjoying the Pallas-Yllas landscapes. After 30 kms of pumping adrenaline round your arteries return to the Lodge for a sauna before supper.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available.
This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
