A 5 day holiday beginning with a flight to Finland's northernmost airport and the village of Ivalo. There alongside the frozen Ivalo river spend a day in the surrounding fjells. Another Snowmobiling. In the evenings soak your chilled bones in a hot tub, take suppers made from locally foraged ingredients and be ready to get outside at a moment's notice into the surrounding wilderness where sightings of Aurora average. And as a valediction to Inari, on the final night of your stay keep watch around an open fire in a Kota for a dance by Lady Aurora.
This eponomously named hotel with its Darth Vader helmet like roof faces the frozen Ivalojoki (or Avveeljuuhâ in Inari Sami) on one side and the airport road on the other. Built in the 1980's it has a 'back to the future' feel about it with pale fawn curtains, bed throws and black leather Ikea Tullstastyle chairs in all the rooms and a similar somewhat retro decor in the public areas. Despite in consequence being something of a Marmite sort of place what gets universal approbation is the unfailing conviviality and helpfulness of the staff. Standard rooms all have a shower/wc and some a bathtub (first come first booked), TV, radio, phone and hair dryer. We always go for river facing rooms and there are also family rooms and 3 suites bookable on request. There's a rectilinear swimming pool kept at 20 Celsius to chill out your bones after safaris, 3 saunas and a mini spa with whirlpool hot tubs and glass sided walls facing out over the river. Ditto the restaurant where you can find such goodies as marinated king crab, smoked white fish, snow grouse paté, and tar (sic) flavored ice cream. And on your doorstep is the hotel's own safari operation where you'll be kitted out with thermal clothing and get your issue of of snow shoes, kick sleds and skiis so can get out in the snow and have fun whenever you want.
fly with Finnair to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland via Helsinki; transfer on arrival to the Hotel Ivalo, check in to your rooms and take supper in the riverside restaurant. Afterwards if the auguries are good you may catch your first sighting of the Aurora in the wilderness area close by the hotel.
after breakfast set off on a snowmobil, the ultimate ATV for use on snow & ice and the supersonic Jeremy Clarkson way of getting around Inari: riding one through the forest is just about as boy's own racer as it gets. Modern 4 stroke machines whether Bombardier Ski-Doos, Lynx or Polaris with their low centre of gravity are easy and safe to drive, controlled for acceleration and braking from the handle bar and have a 'kill switch' to shut down the engine in emergencies. Scooting through the forest along soft snow trails, over frozen ice lakes and across mogul littered tundra is a magic way of enjoying the fjell landscapes. At the mid-point of your safari you can take a breather while your guide prepares a light al fresco lunch around an open fire and you savour the silence of the wilderness and the sound of the wind winding round the tops of the pines. Return to the hotel for a swim, sauna and supper.
Slow down a little with a safari by husky to contrast with your high speed one yesterday. You'll be picked up and taken to a kennels where the dogs all have their own names, character and little kennel houses spaced out in a forest clearing. The musher will show you how to balance on the sled, use the brake, steer and generally handle your own dog team. Whilst all this is going down, the cacophony of wooing, singing, screetching and howling will reach a near deafening pitch only to subside the moment your team pulls away; then all you will hear is the slicing of the runners cutting through the snow. En route you'll stop and tumble into a wilderness hut and warm up over an open fire and a hot soup lunch. Musher's stories are told both tall and short. Return to the hotel for a swiw, sauna and supper.
After breakfast take the safari of your choice picked from our portfolio. From short ones, all day ones or overnight hardcore adventure tours. Whilst you can book on the spot it’s best to confirm at least the ones you really want to do beforehand to ‘avoid disappointment’ as the ‘speak your weight ‘machine voices have it. And no we don’t speak with forked tongue – you’ll pay the same. In the evening take supper and then snow shoe walk over the river to a Kota in which, around an open fire, you can keep an eye out for what will be your last sighting (hopefully, maybe, with the Gods on your side) if the Northern Lights.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
