A 5 or 7 day 'Design Your Own' snow safari holiday at a wilderness lodge high above the Arctic Circle close by Saariselka's fjell area and a forest area of pine, spruce & larch. Muotka sits alongside a frozen river. At Moutkan Maja you'll have the chance to meet & mingle with them whilst sledding with reindeer, mushing huskies, snowmobiling and searching out the Northern Lights. What makes this adventure beyond special is the envelop of comfort.
Muotka Wilderness Lodge sits alongside a frozen river a zillion miles away from anything urban: noise, lighting and people. Close to Inari, home of the indigenous people of Sapmi (Lapland), you'll have the chance to meet & mingle with them whilst sledding with reindeer, mushing huskies, snowmobiling and searching out Father Christmas. What makes this adventure beyond special is the envelope of comfort that co-owner Mari Lappalainen has turned the lodge into; the sheer awesomeness of the surrounding forest with frozen crystal snow cleaving to pine & birch and the mushing, sledding and snowmobiling. (Not forgetting the 200 or so average number of times the Northern Lights show themselves).
fly to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland via Helsinki, transfer to Nellim and check in to your selected room at the Wilderness Lodge. Supper in the hotel with a walk afterwards, down to the lake’s edge for an inaugural sighting of the Northern Lights (possibly, hopefully, maybe!)
take breakfast and then take off on your chosen safari for the day. You can snowmobile some 15km over to Armi Palanoja’s reindeer corral, learn to lasso one, and take a short sleigh ride through the ‘can’t hear a pin drop’ snowscape.Afterwards over some soothing hot salmon soup you'll hear something of a traditional herders' life before sowmobiling back to the lodge. You can also snowmobile pure and simple across mogul littered tundra, alongside ice covered lakes and along the winding forest trails of the Urho Kekkonen National Park;the ultimate 'boy's toy' adventure your snowmobile day runs to about 4 hours of adrenaline pumping snow scooting broken only by an al fresco light lunch over an open fire. If you want to go husky mushing you you'll be taken to a local husky kennels where the musher will show you how to balance on the sled, use the brake, steer and generally handle your own dog team. And during your time with the head musher he’ll explain the role of the lead, swing, team and wheel dogs, and their training. To complete the agony of choice you can snow shoe or cross country ski with a guide over to Kiiopaa with its staggering views across to Saariselka Fjell. And each night of your stay there are different ways you can search for the Northern Lights; travelling by snowmobile for a nightime watch in one of Juoka Lappalainen's hides; snowshoe or snowmobile out into the darkness or spend the night in a Bubble, a somewhat eccentric way of seeing them!! But take a look under Lodgings.
