Your Adventure

An 8 Day holiday snow safariing from Utsjoki , the remote eponymously named village in Finnish Lapland's northernmost 'Kunta' (pop 1,200) which stretches across vast open fjells, wilderness lakes and river valleys to the Teno river formng the border with Norway. You'll stay with Henry Valle & his family snow shoeing, cross country skiing, reindeer sledding, ice fishing and cross the border to go husky mushing. You'll live the life of the Sami, learn to read animal snow tracks & immerse yourself in Sami culture (more than half of Utsjoki's population are Sami). And of course search for the Northern Lights in this vast, arctic desert wilderness where all you can hear is the sound of the wind winding its way along the valleys and up through the trees.

Valle Holiday Cabin Village

Owner driven by Henry Valle and his family, the Valle Holiday Cabin Village is by the Teno River about 2km from the village centre. There are 5 wood cabins each a short step from the main hospitality building which houses the reception area and a Lappish styled restaurant overlooking the river and the distant Norwegian fjells. Each cabin has two twin bedded bedrooms, a kitchenette/living room area with open log wood fire, sauna and shower/WC; if you want to make up a larger party, Henry also has a larger 3 bedroomed house and an apartment that can sleep up to 8 in 4 bedrooms.

1st Day UK- Lapland

Fly with Finnair to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland via Helsinki. Private group transfer to Utsjoki (170 km/2 hours). Meet your Sami host on arrival and check in to your cabin or hotel room. Dinner in Deatnu, the hotel's restaurant overlooking the river & Norwegian (sic) fjells during which your host will run through the days' programme.

2nd Day Snow Fun

After breakfast your guide will sort out your thermal clothing before you set off to master the arts of snow shoeing and cross country skii-ing. Once you have grasped the basic techniques you'll set off in Bear Grylls mode learning how to spot animals, read their tracks, make and light a fire in the traditional Sami manner around which you take sooty coffee. Depending on the season you might also have a chance to learn a centuries old method of fishing for burbot whose roe whilst not quite of caviar rank is certainly pretty epic. After lunch your host will take you to the “Church houses” dating from the 17th & 18th century's close to the village and the village house “Giisa” with its collection of Sámi handicrafts made by local artisans. Dinner in restaurant Deatnu followed by a guided walk in search of the Northern Lights.

3rd Day Reindeer Safari

Today is, if you like, the Day of the Reindeer the animal at the heart of the Sami's traditional existence and culture. After breakfast walk to the nearby reindeer 'fence' line' of your host Petteri Valle's corral. Petteri is a 5th generation herder and either he or another herder will introduce you to his reindeer, take you for a short sled ride, tell you of the life & times of the Sami and the changing practices in animmal husbnadary over the years and warm you up with sooty coffee. Lunch is back at the restaurant Deatnu with the afternoon to do with as you please. Dinner in Deatnu with an optional Northern Lights tour (supplement payable).

4th Day Husky Safari

After breakfast transfer to Dag Broch's husky kennels in the Tana valley on the Norwegian side of the Teno river. Dag, an occasional contestant in the 1000km Finnmarksløpet dog race, is a true musher with an evident love for his 30 plus dogs. Your musher for the day will show you how to balance on the sled, use the brake, steer and generally handle your own dog team and whilst all this is going down the cacophony of wooing, singing and howling will reach a near deafening pitch only to subside the moment your team pulls away. Mush two to a sled for 2 hours through the beautiful winter fell landscape with only the sound of the winding around the fjells and the dog's breath to break the silence. After take an Arctic al fresco snack and sooty coffee around an open fire before returing to returning to Utsjoki. Dinner that evening in Deatnu.

5th/7th Days Design Your Own Adventures

After breakfast you can either watch the days go by (days being pretty brief in winter!); forest ski, journey to Varangerfjord & Nesseby Fishing Village; snow shoe or hike. In the evening of your final day gather around an open fire in a traditional Kota for a valedictory supper.
