The Adventure

a 5 day short break holiday with a clutch of never to be forgotten adventures in the heart of Sapmi (Lapland) during the months of the White Nights when the sun never sets. You'll cruise on Lake Inari in a traditional clinker built river boat with Sami reindeer herder Heiki Paltto, go horse riding with Tinja Myllykangas known locally as the ‘Blonde Dog Whisperer’ (she keeps huskies as well as horses) and watch the day go by every 24 hours listening to a silence, the like of which you've never heard before. You’ll stay at the Wilderness Lodge Korpikartano in the remote wilderness of Menesjarvi close by Inari, the spiritual heartland of the Sami people immortalised by Philip Pullman in his trilogy ‘Dark Materials and where you can literally hear ‘the sound of the silence’. On top of which you can soothe your worldly cares away in a sauna after a day out in the forest or on the Lake.

Korpikartano Wilderness Lodge in Summer

t’s hard to imagine anywhere or anything as authentically redolent of Sapmi, and Sami culture, as wife & husband Anne Harju & Timo Halonen’s Korpikartano Lodge in the village of Menesjarvi (pop 47). Converted from a primary school that closed in 2005 the Lodge’s two separate buildings are set slightly apart with one being the ‘main’ one housing the restaurant, reception and small sitting room and the other a dormitory with lake view rooms. Each building has its own sauna and our rooms overlooking the lake, have a private WC/shower; hairdryer, TV/Radio and been furbished in a simple pristine style, with pine clad walls and homely fabrics. The surrounding grounds lead down to the lake where there are canoes and kayaks for you take to the lake when you please. Above all the Korpikartano is Anne & Timo and Anne & Timo are the Korpikartano. It’s their special hospitality in quite literally the middle of nowhere that makes this an uber special place.

1st Day UK - Menesjarvi

fly from London Heathrow or Manchester via Helsinki to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland. Meet your driver/guide at the airport and transfer to the Hotel Korpikartano and settle into your room. Take supper in the hotel and afterwards sit outside on the terrace or walk down to the edge of the lake to watch the sun not set!!

2nd Day The Family Paltto

after breakfast transfer via Inari to meet Heiki, Anni-Saari, Nils-Heikki, & Kaija Paltto and spend the day as their guests both at their home and out on Lake Inari. Family Paltto are Saami born & bred and between them keep alive traditional Saami skills: from reindeer herding to felt making. When you arrive you'll be taken in a traditional clinker built riverboat along the pine lined Lemmenjoki travelling around 17kms through a vast emptyness of moorland, wood clad fjells, streams, rock to the stunning Ravadas Falls. Heiki will beach the boat and dish out reindeer soup & sooty coffee by a resin-scented campfire and Joik for you. On your return to their home you'll have chance to walk up to the fence line and meet some of his reindeer before returning to Menesjarvi.

3rd & 4th Days Design Your Own Days

over the next two days you can do whatever you please. You can hike on your own in the Lemmenjoki National Park with its clumpy pine clad hills, glaciar formed eskers and vast open landscapes either on the 4km Nature Trail or the more demanding 18km Joenkiellinen Circle one; hike with a guide under the Midnight Sun to the top of Otsamo or along the banks of the Juutuanjokki; meet up with Tinja Myllykangas and go horse riding on one of her sure footed fjord horses; kayak or canoe on Lake Menesjarvi; discover why forest berries are as much a part of the Finnish Soul as the sauna on a guided berry & mushroom picking walk or troll for salmomn, trout, grayling and vendance on Lake Inari. And of course you can just watch the day go by, which is a 24 hour activity.
