A Reykjavik Northern Lights short break with a difference: 2 nights in the city dubbed ‘Latitude with Attitude’ PLUS an overnight tour to the new FossHotel Glacier Lagoon for a night under the stars spotting for the Northern Lights alongside the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. On the way to the Lagoon you’ll get up close and personal with the Skógafoss & Seljalandsfoss plunge waterfalls, Reynisfjara’s black sand beaches at Vík í Mýrdal and Reynisdrangar’s basalt sea stacks all under the imperious backdrop of Mýrdalsjökull to the west of which is the smaller ice cap Eyjafjallajökull. The new Glacier Hotel out by Jökulsárlón has an edgy new design and bedrooms with wide panoramic windows so inside or out you’ll have just about the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights you can get.
just off Laugavegur, the city’s main street, the Klettur is one of Reykjavik’s newest hotels now grown from its inaugaration as modest lodgings to be a 166 room ScanPlus hotel. Styled with a black lava rock motif in the public areas and a biscuit brown and light pine in the bedrooms, the standard rooms are on the first three floors and de-luxe ones on the 2 upper floors with views to the north or south facing balconies. All have private WC/shower, fridge, satellite TV, safe, hairdryer and WI-FI. There is a ground floor breakfast room, lounge with a pool table and evening bar with a range of Icelandic beers.
In Hnappavellir mid way between Skaftafell and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, the new and locally designated 4 star Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon is a unique combi of edgy design and traditional Icelandic features, notably the grass roof. The fabrics, furnishing and style of all 100 or so rooms pay homage to volcanic colours: muted greys, steel, black and a variety of in between hues. Most importantly the hotel is a stone's throw from the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and stands in vast open plains ideal for spotting the Northern Lights and if you see them reflected on the Lagoon's surface you'll think you've died and gone to heaven.
Fly from your choice of London (Heathrow or Gatwick), Manchester or Glasgow airports. Transfer on arrival to the Hotel Klettur. Dominated by Perlan the most dramatic clutch of water tanks in the world and Hallgrimskirka, the city's Lutheran parish church whose design echoes basalt lava flows, the city with its long time ‘cool’ reputation is a place to chillax in at night and savour food to die for.
After breakfast set off with your guide across Hellisheiði Heath past the Mt Hengill volcano, an active central with an enormous magma chamber powering some of Iceland‘s geothermal energy plants. Descend from Hellisheiði to Hveragerði with its cornucopia of soft fruits & vegetables grown under glass, and then east to Hvolsvöllur through the Flói meadowlands and across Þjórsá Iceland’s longest river. Continue on the coast road with its vast outwash plains forded by bridges and Skeidararsandur, the black sands of the Skeidarsandur glacier before arriving at Skaftafell National Park dominated by Vatnajokull. End the day at the extraordinary Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon before dinner at FossHotel Glacier Lagoon.
Spend the morning with more time at the Lagoon with its luminous blue icebergs floating out to sea and seals basking on the black moraine pebble sea shore before setting off for Dyrhólaey, the rock arch promontory at Vík í Mýrdal whose cliffs are home to a colonies of sea birds and from where you can see Reynisdrangar’s basalt sea stacks standing like sentinels out at sea.

*Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
