All Our Iceland Portfolio Adventures

Your Adventure

Celebrating New Years’ Eve, watching Reykjavik's fireworks that light up the city at midnight and the bonfires that garland it in the manner of the locals. Gorging on a lamb & seafood buffet at the legendary Restaurant Reykjavik and joining the locals with their fireworks at midnight in the grounds around Hallgrímskirkja. Not forgetting a chance to catch the Northern Lights, bathing in the Blue Lagoon and playing in Iceland’s geologically sculpted scenery: its ice fields, moraine deserts, volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, lava fields, black sand beaches and geysirs.
An unlikely city as there ever was to be accorded the description by a web site ‘as hip & happening as it’s possible to be’; Reykjavik is none the less just that. The locals have developed a prodigious reputation for enjoying themselves which they put to the test on New Year’s Eve; the shops and eateries are edgily stylish and according to the late great, inestimable  AA Gill ‘the women, groin achingly beautiful and the benchmark against whom all others are found wanting’ (GQ March 2013).

Hotel Klopp

Hotel Klopp is just off Laugavegur with its artisan shops, restaurants and coffee shops ( Kaffitar is our favourite) and a stone’s throw from the city centre. For us the hotel is the best minimum-frills hotel in Reykjavik and if you’re going to be out and about a lot, definitely the place. Rooms are on the small side compared to most hotels but all have mini-bar (stocked on request), hairdryer, shower, flat screen TV and free WI-FI. Social media site commentators universally praise the staff (smiley, helpful & polite without servility) and the breakfast (buffet table laden with fruit juices, cereals, yoghurts, eggs, toast, rolls, cheese, ham, fresh fruit, tea and coffee). We concur.

Hotel Plaza

In the heart of the old city on “Ingólfstorg” the main square the Plaza couldn’t be better suited for a New Year’s Eve stay with eateries, drinking holes and nightlife on your doorstep. The Plaza’s glass edifice is unmissable and behind which a complete makeover over the past few years provides rooms with a Scandi modern décor marked by contemporary oak furnishings and bright fabrics. TA reviewers consistently sing the praises of both the staff and the breakfast. All our rooms are Superior doubles or twins with their own free WI-FI, TV, WC/shower, hairdryer, tea & coffee making facilities and more.

1st Day UK – Iceland

Fly to Iceland's Keflavik International Airport from the UK (Gatwick or Heathrow [Manchester on request]), transfer to and check in at your chosen hotel. Get out and about and discover why we tag Reykjavik 'Latitude with Attitude' and eat out simply at Saegreifinn or luxier at MARS ( 25% off & payable locally).

2nd/3rd Day (s) Design Your Own Day

Choose from our selection of Safaris to get your New Year’s Eve Holiday off with a geological kick: for starters why not try our version of Iceland's most iconic safari, the Golden Circle. Start with the Geyser area where Strokkur spouts 40m high every 5 to 10 minutes alongside steaming fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools. Continue to Gullfoss, the ‘Golden Falls’, where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before torrenting down a large gorge between the Mid Atlantic Ridge’s tectonic plates. Then down to Laugarvatn Spa, stopping of for a steam bath in the manner of the locals before hitting Hvergardi, the so called greenhouse village where all manner of exotica grows under glass in the warmth of geothermal heat rising from the ground like a slightly surreal garden centre. Of course this is just your 'starter for ten' - the day is very much a 'design your own' one; just take a look under the Safaris tag for alternatives.

New Year’s Eve

After breakfast transfer out to the legendary Blue Lagoon for a morning's bathe in its turquoise blue waters softening up muscles, skin & temperament for the evening's fun & games. You'll have time to coat yourself with the Lagoon's silica mud pack or enjoy our upgraded Lagoon experience (supplement payable) . Once back in the city, chillax in your hotel before dinner. In the early evening stroll to the Restaurant Reykjavik (literally just across the road from the Plaza or a 5 minute walk from the Klopp). With its distinctive canary yellow clapboard facade and known as Kaffi Reykjavik up until 5 years ago when owners Þórður Bachman and Hafsteinn Häsle spent a fortune on doing it up, revamping the menu and justifiably annointing it a restaurant. We count 4 kinds of smoked lamb, 5 kinds of herring, 3 kinds of salmon on the menu and that's just for starters. Afterwards, we'll provide you with a small pack of fireworks so you won't be left out of things, before you walk up the underheated road to the grounds surrounding Hallgrímskirkja where the locals with their own fireworks blow out the old year and bring in the New. Then it's to bed or bar as your fancy takes you.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are variable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and at the time you confirm your booking we always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.

Reykjavik with a Local

Our local guide Audur knows Reykjavik like the back of her hand, lives there and more importantly tailors her walking tours of the city to the interests of her guests rather than the tourist board. With a daughter she describes as her Princess she also has a mother’s sense of the maximum duration of a walk between ice cream and soft drink vendors. With never more than a dozen people at a time her walks are very individual but if you want her all to yourself you can have her for a private tour. Hotel pick up at 08.00 on Day of Choice. Tour lasts for 8 1/2 hours. Price £55pp. Children go free, gratis and for nothing. Teenagers pay half price.

Reykjavik For Foodies

On the tastiest tour in Iceland you will enjoy 13 of our most delicious traditional cuisines and explore the highlights of Reykjavi The free roaming Icelandic Lamb, Homemade Ice Cream, Seasonal Cheese tasting, the famous Icelandic Hot dog, amazing seafood cuisine and so much more!

Down into the Glacier

A day to take home with you, journeying right up on to Langjokull glacier Iceland's 2nd largest glacier and then down inside it. Your journey starts with a ScanStop & See at Hraunfossar, where rivulets leach from under the Hallmundarhraun lava field and dribble in curtains down alongside the Hvita river. Continue to Deildartunguhver geothermal hot spring with its water pumping out of the ground at 100 degrees and then another ScanStop & See at Husafell before swapping buses for an 8 wheel Leviathon to get up on to Langjokull glacier and down inside it. The Ice Cave is a man-made system of tunnels and chambers following the formation of the glacier  stretching up to 300 metres into the ice cap and  culminating in a gob smacking ice cave festooned with stalactites and stalagmites.  As your guide leads you along the crevasses, moulins (glacier mills), waterways, ice layers and gaps between them, the ice changes colour from snow white to ice blue .Hotel pick up at 08.00 on Day of Choice. Tour lasts for 10 1/2 hours. Price £215pp. Kinder (5-11) go free, gratis and for nothing. Teenagers (12-15) pay half price. Warm clothing a must (Waterproof shoes, thick socks, windproof/waterproof coat, hat, gloves). Plus sunglasses & swim wear (sic).

The Iconic Golden Circle

A ScanAdventures Safari that bombards the senses. First stop the landscapes south of Lake Þingvallavatn before the National Park Þingvellir. From there continue to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, with its foaming, thundering waters invariably over-arched with a rainbow. Then to the Geyser area with its spouting water geysers and bubbling mud pots with time for lunch (payable locally). Return to Reykjavík via the cathedral at Skálholt, the extraordinary crater Kerið and the greenhouse community Hveragerði. Hotel pick up at 08.00 on Day of Choice. Tour lasts for 8 1/2 hours. Price £55pp. Children go free, gratis and for nothing. Teenagers pay half price.

Northern Lights Safari

take a ScanAdventures hunt for the beautiful Auroras known as the Northern Lights. Sometimes white, wispy and elusive; at others rainbow coloured, swirling and dramatic. The Norwegian, who first gave an explanation as to how they came about was driven mad (literally) by them: if you’re lucky enough to catch a sighting your reaction may be a touch more muted but no less awe struck. Hotel pick up at 19.30 on Evening of Choice. Tour lasts for 3 to 5 hours. Price £30pp. Children go free, gratis and for nothing. Teenagers pay half price.
