Can be in a valley with, as it were, the valley’s walls acting as the nave and a waterfall at the end as a chancel; on a strip of black sand beach fringed at its edge with white surf for the ultimate monochromatic wedding setting, or in a spire topped Lutheran chapel at Oddi in Rangárvellir. Whichever spot you choose and whatever form you’d like your wedding to take, whether Civil or Lutheran, your hospitality is at the Hotel Ranga with its gob smacking views stretching over meadowland in one direction and up to brooding, ice capped Mount Hekla in the other. With its outdoor hot tubs, food to die for, World Pavilion with edgily designed suites themed around the seven continents (yes we do know why), hands on and into everything owner, and some of the island’s most dramatic spots from Eyjafjallajökull to Jökulsárlón almost on your doorstep we think the Ranga is pretty much the jewel in Iceland’s crown.
In any way you need to make your wedding what you want it be; above all special and personal. All you have to do is find a potential spouse and we’ll help you with everything you need from the paperwork to the flowers; the wedding breakfast to the choir. And since we organised one of the first weddings for an overseas couple at Oddi Church we think we can say without blushing that we know more than most.
Set in meadowland that skirts Iceland’s southern coastline against a backdrop of Mount Hekla, the Ranga started life as a private fishing lodge alongside its eponymous salmon laden river. Over the years under the tutelage of owner Fredrik Paulsson and guidance of former manager Björn Nygårds Kers it’s morphed into something of a legend with twin & de-luxe rooms ranging in size from 18 to 26 sq.m, outdoor hot tubs, a bar with deep leather armchairs & sofas (and some idiosyncratic bar stools); billiard rooms and a World Pavillion with suites themed around the seven continents Rooms have everything you need including flat screen TV; free Wi-Fi ; telephone; bathtub or shower with hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers; minibar; coffee and tea-maker; 24 hour room service, laundry and wake up service. Centre stage in the hotel’s restaurant is a signature Surf & Turf dish translated into a herbaceous roast lamb paired with meaty, buttery steamed lobster and a skyr dessert that’s to die for. Never one to let meadow land grass grow under his feet(!) Fredrik recently oversaw the building of an observatory with two 11-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain computerized telescopes from which you can see even the detail of Saturn’s rings. And of course the hotel’s remote location is ideal for catching the Northern Lights for which the hotel offers a night time alert system. Notwithstanding everything that’s gone on over the years the hotel has kept its very personal owner driven style and ambience.
Fly to Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport, collect your hire car on arrival, follow road 41 past the Blue Lagoon and drive along the coast road to Hella. Settle in to your room and enjoy dinner overlooking the eponymous West Ranga River whose headwaters stretch back to the foot of Mount Hekla.
Take breakfast and spend the day enjoying some of Iceland’s most iconic attractions: Dyrholaey’s signature rock arch; nearby Myrdalsjokull (mire dale glacier); Seljandfoss and the sea stacks at Reynisdrangar down by Vik. In the evening over dinner the local priest will join you to run through the details of the ceremony.
Spend the morning prepping for your day: having your hair and make-up done or a massage treatment. Transfer by Super Jeep to Oddi Church for a traditional Lutheran wedding ceremony followed by a Wedding Breakfast at the hotel. You’re done:married, hitched, wed, spliced.
After breakfast drive up to the Geyser area where Strokkur spouts 40m high every 5 to 10 minutes alongside steaming fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools and then to Gullfoss, the ‘golden falls’, where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before torrenting down a large gorge between the Mid Atlantic Ridge’s tectonic plates. Continue to Laugarvatn Spa for a steam bath in the manner of the locals and an afternoon tea of lava bread baked in a local geothermal oven – the ground!
Take leave of the hotel with a special breakfast valediction and drive out along the Reykjanes peninsula for a bathe or more in the Blue Lagoon before continuing to the airport and flying home.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
