Foss Hotel Reykjavik

A faintly surreal exterior with slate grey tile cladding (think NASA space shuttle) the Foss Reykjavik houses some of the city's largest rooms and on the tower floor one's with the best views of Faxaloi Bay and Mount Esja. The main rooms come in at a sizeable 22sqm up to floor 7, from there to the 13th they morph into de-luxe rooms with cityscape views with 10m2 more and then on top of that (pun intended) the upper floors have a mix of family rooms and suites right up to a ginormous 59m2. All come with shower/bathtub, bathroom underfloor heating, black out blinds , flat screen TV, free WI-FI and are fitted out in Scandivavian hardwood and light blue, purple and slate grey furnishings. In the public ares there is an innovative bar cum brasserie called the Beer Garden with a 25 strong list of beers on offer and a restaurant whose breakfast is getting good reviews from TA contributors who normally do nothing more than grumble!

The Merc Sprinter

The almost legendary Merceds Benz Sprinter with best in class occupant comfort (reclining seats, footrest, 3 point seat belt & WI-FI)  and a suite of pre-emptive safety features is custom made for Iceland's sometimes tortuous roads and rocky terain.

1st Day UK – Reykjavik (1900+kms)

fly from your chosen UK airport to Keflavik International Airport, transfer to and check in at Foss Hotel Reykjavik or similar.

2nd Day Reykjavik – Husavik (500kms)

take a short taxi ride (payable locally) to your pick up point, meet your guide and fellow traveller (of whom there will be no more than 14) and step aboard the legendary specially modified Mercedes Thunderbolt Sprinter that will whistle stop you round the island’s 1700 km ring road in the next 4 days. Head North for Borgarnes home to a settlement centre (10 min Pit Stop) and then to Grábrók the largest of a trio of craters along a short volcanic fissure for a 40 Minute Hike culminating with spectacular views over Borgarfjordur. Then along the North West of Iceland through the Öxnadalsheidi Pass to Akureyri (60 min Pit Stop); Innbærinn the Old Town with its carefully preserved and renovated buildings is little more than a stone’s throw from the centre. Then it’s a short last lap of the day to Husavik with its iconic wooden church Húsavíkurkirkjaon overlooking the harbour. Cross the Finishing Line at Overnight at Foss Hotel Husavik.

3rd Day Husavik – Fáskrúðsfjörðu (400kms)

set off South for Lake Myvatn with its surreal landscapes sculpted by volcanic lava and a known habitat for an astonishing variety of bird life. Start the day with a (20 min Pit Stop) at the Skútustaðir pseudo craters followed by a 30 Minute Walk through the lava fields surrounding the contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir. Afterwards cleanse both body and soul with a (60 minute Bathe) at the Myvatn Nature baths an altogether more authentic geothermal pool than the B*** L*****. Then it’s a (20 Min Pit Stop) at the hot sulphurous springs of Námafjall and the smouldering sulphurous Krafla before a hike around Dettifoss whose slate grey torrents of water constitute the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The vast seemingly endless desert of glacially crushed rock leads to Egilsstaðir for a (10 min Pit Stop) before arriving at Fáskrúðsfjörður, a diminutive fishing village on its eponymous fjord. Cross the Finishing Line at 20.00. Overnight at Hotel Austur.

4th Day Fáskrúðsfjörðu – Vatnajökull (400kms)

After breakfast set off along the contoured indented coastline dotted with fishing villages and overhung by rhyolite crags for your first (20 min Pit Stop) of the day at Djúpivogur a tiny ( pop 467 & falling) coastal village. Then to the positively metropolitan Höfn (pop 2000+) overlooked by Vatnajökull the largest Ice Cap in Europe for a (60 minute Lunch Stop). After an indulgent 90 minutes for lunch the highlight of the afternoon’s journey is the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, undoubtedly one of Iceland’s ‘wow factors’ where the bergs calved from the glacier melt down in size before drifting out to sea. Stop off and cruise amongst the Lagoon’s Bergs before getting up close and personal with the ice sculptures and ice ridges of Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue. Cross the Finishing Line at 19.00. Overnight at Hotel Núpar

5th Day Skaftafell – Reykjavik (400kms)

Drive along the island’s southern shoreline to Vik in Myrdal Iceland’s southernmost tip and the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the vertiginous cliff of basalt columns resembling a rock step pyramid called Hálsanef. Out to sea are the spectacularly shaped basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar overflown by puffins, fulmars and guillemots. Continue to the melt water falls Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss for two separate (10 minute Pit Stops). Then to Geyser (20 min Pit Stop) geothermal area with its hot springs, sulphurous yellow fumaroles & Thykkuhverir’s mud pots; Gullfoss (20 min Pit Stop), whose waters flow down a 3 step staircase before plunging down a crevice at right angles to the flow of the river and Pingvellir (20 min Pit Stop), home to the Althing where the Vikings gave up rape and pillage in favour of democracy. Then it’s straight in to Reykjavik for a congratulatory night out in the City we dub Latitude with Attitude.
