Sit back and enjoy this guided tour searching for the Northern Lights in Alta & Tromso; two markedly Norwegian different cities but both associated with the Northern Lights. It was just north of Alta on the Kaafjord that Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland gave the world the first scientific explanation of the Aurora whilst Tromso is sometimes refered to as the mild place to see them being bathed, as they are, in the wramth of the Gulf Stream Drift. You'll travel with a small group of like minded travelers, stay in the best hotels the cities have to offer, savour the glistening white mountainscape, cross glass flat fjords and cut through the Lyngen Alps.

Thon Hotel Alta

Close by the Nordlyskatedralen (Northern Lights Cathedral) the Thon is on the upper floors of the city shopping centre just 15 mins from the airport and a stone's throw from the bus station. All rooms have WI-FI, Mini Bar, private WC/Shower, hairdryer, telephone & TV (limited English channnels). Fabrics & furnishing are in rustic tones set off with matt black wood. With Norwegian ingenuity the breakfast retsaurant morphs in to a pzza restaurant during the day and the a la carte Brasseri Alta at night.

The Edge Hotel

on the edge of the harbour, with an edgy design and (probably) on the edge of displacing the Ishavshotel as the luxiest hotel in Tromso (enough puns), the Edge is the place for some serious tlc after the rigours of a day on safari, or a night out spotting the Northern Lights. Our upper level rooms have serious views out to the ocean or the mountains, are a good 24sq m with stylish charcoal grey, arctic blue, aurora green or fire red fabrics and furnishings. Perfectly located for our airport transfer & safaris pick up/drop off point and Storgata if you want some retail therapy at any point. Clients rave about the breakfast: the local produce used, the menu and the chef staffed waffle station.

1st Day UK - Arctic Norway

Fly from London Heathrow via Oslo to Alta some 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Arctic Norway. Take a taxi or FlyBuss to the city centre and check in to your hotel.

2nd Day Husky Mushing & Igloo Night

After breakfast lace up your dog team again and mush across the vast covererd snow plains and down by the banks of the Alta river. Your mush ends at the Sorrisniva Igloo Alta and lunch in the hotel's restaurant. Spend the afteroon kick sledding in the hotel's surrounds or litreally and metaphorically soak up the atmosphere in a hot tub. After a tour of igloo with its 20 or so rooms, ice suites, ice bar and scuplture gallery, repair to the restaurant for dinner. The menu varies according to season but is focused on local ingredients including ptarmigan, smoked reindeer and crab. Then fortify yourself with a night cap int eh Ice Bar and settle down for one of the more unusual nights of your life :sleepping in an igloo.

3rd Day Alta - Tromso

After breakfast sit back and enjoy the mountain and fjord studded route to Tromso You'll cross glass flat fjords by ferry at Olderdalen & Svensby, sit gob smacked at the towering white peaks of the Lyngen Alps, watch little puff clouds being driven dowmn the side of mountains, and pass clapboard wooden buildings scattered here and there. Arrive early evening in Tromso, the city once dubbed the 'Paris off the North' becasue of the fur coats worn by the city's women and the starting point in the 19th century for Amundsen, Nobile & Nansen’s expeditions to the North Pole . Check in to your hotel

4th Day Tromso

Your pick: safari by snowmobile, husky, reindeer, snow shoe or catamaran (sic) and eat sea food to die for. We suggest a valedictory dinner at Anne Brit Andreessen’s ‘Emma’s Drommekjokken which dishes up grilled scallops with parmesan, pepper-roasted king crab, cod Carpaccio, whale sushi, reindeer fillet and the like. Their gastronome meal runs to 5 or 6 courses and is a surprise menu based on what’s good in the markets that day.

5th day Tromso - UK

Check out of your hotel late morning and transfer to Langnes airport for your return flight back to the UK.
