Follow in the footsteps of legendary Polar Explorers like Edward Parry, Roald Amundsen & Ernest Shackleton on our besoke adventure safari trip to Tromso lying 350 miles or so north of the Arctic Circle and Spitsbergen, the largest of the Svalbard archipelago's islands. In each you can design your own safari programme including anything from an evening search for the Northern Lights to a snowmobile out to a former Cold War listening post just 600 miles from the North Pole. And as well as 'better than even chances' of seeing Lady Aurora, in the deep mid -winter you can live through Polar Nights when the sun stays below the horizon 24/7.

We don’t do fancy lead in prices and at the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.

Svalbard Winter Safaris

Safari options are determined by light or lack of it and the date of the first snow falls. The Mørketiden, when the sun is below the horizon, lasts from October 26 to February and the Polar Night, when it's at least 6 degrees below it, from November 11th  to January 30th. During these times it can anywhere beteen eerily bright from the reflected light on the snow from a full moon or direct illumination from the Northern Lights and slate grey or coal black if thick cloud cover occudes any light.
From snowfall until May 20th you can mush huskies from the Trapper’s Station at Bolterdalen which is about 10km from the town; you'll be instructed on how to handle your own dog team and then mush across Spitzbergen's glacial landscape. Up until January 31st you can do this under (hopefully) the Northern Lights; either way the only sound you'll hear is the dogs' breath and the only sights the snow capped tops of Spitsbergen's jagged peaks.

On Tuesdays and Fridays you can also have dinner at Bolterdalen, an atmospheric collection of old trapper's huts where a meal sourced from foraged from local sources is dished up accompanied by an informal lecture on a trapper's life.
If you fancy something a bit more hardcore you can snowmobile over terrain the like of which you can't imagine. Modern 4 stroke machines whether Bombardier Ski-Doos, Lynx or Polaris with their low centre of gravity are easy and safe to drive, controlled for acceleration and braking from the handle bar and having a 'kill switch' to shut down the engine in emergencies.Your guide tows a sled behind his snowmobile packed with petrol, food, an emergency shelter, satellite phone, and a complete change of clothing from boots to hat.

And if you want the experience that we calll the 'sound of silence' you can snow shoe at more or less anytime, either by day or at night to search for the Northern Lights between snowfall (accumulating gradually from October) and February15th.
