All Our Norwegian Portfolio Adventures

A 5 Day Holiday in Tromso highlighted with whale watching & Northern Lights cruising on the two masted schooner Donna Wood searching for Humpbacks and Orcas in their Norwegian winter feeding grounds.By day you'll sail out of the Kaldfjorden to the surrounding archipelago with only the sound of the wind pressing against the sails & water lapping against the hull to search for whales by day and the Northern Lights by night. After docking back in Tromso you'll then travel out to the Tamok Valley for a Snowmobile Safari, a night Sami style in a Lavvu and some Reindeer sledding the next morning.

The Edge Hotel

on the edge of the harbour, with an edgy design and (probably) on the edge of displacing the Ishavshotel as the luxiest hotel in Tromso (enough puns), the Edge is the place for some serious tlc after the rigours of a day on safari, or a night out spotting the Northern Lights. Our upper level rooms have serious views out to the ocean or the mountains, are a good 24sq m with stylish charcoal grey, arctic blue, aurora green or fire red fabrics and furnishings. Perfectly located for our airport transfer & safaris pick up/drop off point and Storgata if you want some retail therapy at any point. Clients rave about the breakfast: the local produce used, the menu and the chef staffed waffle station.

Camp Tamok

Eclectic is the word for this wilderness centre about an hour and a half from Tromso’s city centre in a spot in the Vass valley with a 'dry as a bone' micro climate well away from even a smidgen of urban lighting. Boss man Hans-Olav Eriksen, Tor, Tom and Roar Nyheim are as mixed a bunch as you will find. When he’s not ‘bossing’ Hans-Olav is a surgeon; Tor Vidar Nystad is a snow scooter king; Tom Frode Johansen looks after his own pack of huskies and Roar Nyheim is a Norwegian Sami reindeer herder. This very communal enterprise has a 12 person log cabin with reindeer skin covered bunks, a traditional Sami lavvu (tent) and three private aurora cabins for those who want to snuggle up in a bed right under a north facing window and catch the Northern Lights. Then there is a Sami herdsman’s tent with an open fire around which sooty coffee is on tap and reindeer stew brewed, and around and about huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles.

1st Day (Monday) UK – Tromso

fly from London Gatwick direct to Tromso in Northern Norway, transfer to the city centre and check in at the Hotel Edge.

2nd Day Tromso & Northern Lights Cruising

take breakfast in your hotel and discover the city made famous originally as a trading port for hunters and trappers, then as the starting point for Amundsen, Nobile & Nansen’s expeditions to the North Pole. Begin your adventure on the Fjellheisen cable car which whisks you 400m to the top of Mount Storsteinen for a gob smacking panoramic view of the city and its adjacent islands. Take a light lunch at the middle station’s Fjellstua Café before the 4 minute ride back down to base. At 7 in the evening board the oak hulled 2 masted schooner Donna Wood and sail out in to the Kaldfjord for very possibly your first sighting of the Northern Lights. Tuck in to a mariner's dinner perhaps starting with a lusty sweet potato & carrot soup seasoned with chilli, ginger, garlic, onion and coconut milk. Lights out when you please.

3rd Day Whale Watching & Northern Lights

Today you'll cruise around the archipalago whale watching, visiting some of the islands and anchoring at different places: Musvaer,Toftenest, Tromvik for staggering views of the raw vertiginous mountains and Hundergtinden & Hillesoytoppen for some easy guided snow shoeing and equally epic mountain views. In the late afternoon you'll have a chance to fish for your supper and put your own cod on the supper menu. Later it's up on deck before the mast for more Northern Lights hunting for which the auguries are always better than average being out at sea away from any urban light pollution.

4th Day Whale Watching & Snowmobiling

Spend the morning whale watching before docking in Tromso & transferring out to Camp Tamok (a commune of Sami tents and hospitality cabin) for a snowmobile safari along a 15km trail through the Finn Valley up to frozen Lake Tamok where you can try your hand at ice fishing. Drive as a pair and swap round half way with each person having a go at driving. The contrast between tundra, lake, and mogul like terrain provides the ultimate snowmobile experience from speeding to crawling. Round off the evening with a hot meal by an open fire in nomadic Sami style before sleeping under the stars in a communal Lavvu, 4 room cabin or private Aurora cabin.

5th Day Reindeer Sledding Tromso - UK (Friday)

Warm up with a breakfast and then get ready to try the oldest form of Arctic transport reindeer sledding (the husky is an alien import) along a trail crossing the Tamok Valley. Driving in pairs you can swap positions half way. A hot meal round an open fire in nomadic Sami style is served en-route with some lasso throwing and tales of Sami culture thrown in. Transfer back to Tromso and from there to Langnes airport for your return flight back to the UK
