A 4 day holiday packed with safaris by snowmobile, husky & reindeer whilst staying in the glittering, clinquant, sparkling white ICEHOTEL, and keeping an eye out for the Northern Lights. You’ll sleep in an Art Suite on a bed of ice topped with reindeer skins surrounded by elaborately sculpted ice art; scoot along the frozen Torneladen River under (hopefully) the Northern Lights; mush huskies bred by Kenth Fjellborg who took Monaco’s Prince Albert to the North Pole, and sled behind reindeer with Nils Tjorbin, a 4th generation Sami herder. The brainchild of Yngve Bergqvist who once built an igloo as a gallery for a group of Japanese ice sculptors and called it Ice Art, today the ICEHOTEL has morphed into a hotel proper built afresh every year from the uniquely translucent, turquoise ice cut from the adjacent Torne River . Besam automatic ice doors slide apart to reveal a sort of Sami version of the 'Louvre' with art sculpted and cut from snow, ice and ‘snice’ as they call it: A Hall of Pillars, chandeliers, the ICEBAR and a labyrinth of corridors leading to Snow Rooms, Ice Rooms, Northern Lights rooms and elegantly sculpted Art Suites . In the hotel’s warm areas you can laze in Republic of Fritz Hansen egg chairs; savour the taste of Absolut Vodka infused with lingonberry juice, and dine in the ICEHOTEL's restaurant on Kalix bleak roe; smoked Arctic char & mousse; filet of venison from reindeer and Arctic bramble sorbet.
on Sveavagen which dissects Norrmalm bang in the middle of the city, Miss Clara is the newest hotel from hospitality group Nobis. The rooms with their herringbone parquet framing the bed heads and on the floor, limestone bathroom surfaces, 'Bed Factory' beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, give Stockholm Syndrome a whole new meaning. Of course they’re also fitted out with everything you’d expect from a Nobis hotel, and the toiletries by Orla Kiely, bathrobes and slipper just add to the very special feel of the place.
Artcic Chalets are free-standing, sleep up to three people in two bedrooms (a double and a single) and have a small living room and bathroom with Shower/WC. The walls are faced in tongue & groove pine, furnished with dark slate fabrics and each chalet is equiped with a fridge, kettle, TV, WI-Fi and telephone. Kaamos rooms have a common entrance & hallway with clothes hanging space and their own entrance. They sleep 2 people in either twin or double beds and have a bathroom with Shower/WC. The walls are faced in tongue & groove white pine giving a light forest spring feel and each room is equiped with a fridge, kettle, TV, WI-Fi and telephone. Nordic Chalets are free-standing, sleep up to four people in two bedrooms (a double and one with bunk beds) and have a kitchenette, small living room and bathroom with Shower/WC. Walls are faced with white pine, furnished in light grey and each chalet is equiped with a fridge, kettle, TV, WI-Fi and telephone.
Each suite is individually designed and carved by an international competition winning artist and has a ginormous bed, free standing ice sculptures and its own unique design theme. The bed is illuminated from beneath and made out of ice blocks which support a frame bed on which sits a mattress and reindeer skins. The walls are decorated with ‘snice’ art (a combination of snow, water and air blown from a snow cannon). Imaginative lighting creates almost surreal effects making each and every one ultra cool. Seeing is believing.
fly direct to Stockholm’s Arlanda airport and meet your private driver guide who will take you into the city for a night at either the Hotel Clara or Lydmar.
After breakfast you’ll be collected by your driver and taken to out to Arlanda for the short flight up to Swedish Lapland and the village of Jukkasarvi. Check in and have a light lunch at Hembygsdsgarden (The Old Homestead) before collecting your thermal clothing and taking a guided tour of the ICEHOTEL. After some brief downtime its time to for a frozen river snowmobile safari. (Modern Polaris 4 stroke machines with their low centre of gravity are easy and safe to drive, controlled for acceleration and braking from the handle bar, and have a 'kill switch' to shut down the engine in emergencies). Scoot along the river to a wilderness encampment for some traditional Sami salmon soup before winding your way back to the hotel for a truly adventurous night sleeping on Ice. Choose between an Art Suite with its three dimensional original artwork or a Northern Lights Room with a bed carved out inside a wall sculpture made of ‘snice’.
Wake up to a mug of hot lingonberry juice, a sauna to warm up your bones and breakfast in the ICEHOTEL restaurant. Then transfer the short distance across the river to Kenth & Fjellborg & Taisto Thorneus’s husky kennels for a mush through the forest with a stop en-route for sooty coffee and cake round an open fire. Whisk back to the ICEHOTEL and after a quick turn round, travel out to Nils Torbjorn’s reindeer encampment for a short sled ride through the forest, finished off with suovas (dried smoked reindeer) and some tales of Nils’ extraordinary life journey as a reindeer herder and custodian of Sami culture. Spend the final night of your stay in a heated Arctic Cabin and take supper in the ICEHOTEL restaurant which has Sami inspired speciality table d’hote and a la carte menus served up on ICE plates!
take breakfast and take a look around the village with its collection of wooden buildings and at, the dead end Marknadsvagen, Jukkasarvi’s red ochre wooden church with its colourful triptych. Parts of the building date back to the 17th century and hidden under the nave are the mummified remains of villagers preserved from the 18th. *Guide Prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are variable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don't do fancy lead in prices and at the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction/supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
