the ancient Sami arts of reindeer sledding and the more recent ones of husky mushing and snowmobiling on this ScanAdventure with Sapmi Reindeer Herders. And after each day’s safari wait and watch for the Northern Light to show in the forest clearing surrounding your cabin. Your hosts keep you snug as a bug at night and in their main lodge serve meals based on foraged local root vegetables, venison from reindeer, moose and arctic char around candle lit tables.
reindeer herder Nils Torbjorn Nutti keeps his herd in Saarivuoma. Around 15 years ago during a particularly harsh winter with ice and snow packed down on forest grazing pasture, together with Carina Pingi who kept hers at Gabna Sameby, he necessarily corralled their herds for the winter and fed them on feed. Nil’s father Henrik repaired some old harnesses he had, helped them tame their animals and train them to pull sledges. Then Yngve Bergqvist founder of the ICEHOTEL sent his guests out to see them and something special was born.
include a stay in Stockholm, an overnight at the ICEHOTEL or a Northern Lights Safari to Abisko.

after breakfast, either ride from Mats Berg & Kerstin Nilsson’s stables by the Kalix River or snowmobile across frozen mires, forest trails and mountain foothills. (The five gaited Icelandic (sic) horse is the easiest of rides even if you’re not an equestrian but if you prefer to snowmobile the choice is yours). Whichever you choose you’ll spot grazing moose and reindeer, pick up the tracks of other Arctic wildlife all to Sapmi’s ‘Sound of Silence’. Adventure over, transfer to your host’s Reindeer Lodge for a Sauna and Supper.
this morning your Sami guide will teach you how to master the art of reindeer sledding, that is, standing in the same posture as husky mushers. Sled through marked trails in the forest before returning to the Lodge for lunch. Afterwards visit Jukkasjarvi and the iconic ICEHOTEL for a guided tour of the 24th construction with its consecrated chapel, ice bar and sculpted suites and then walk into to the village with its 17thc wooden church famed for its triptych. Return to the Lodge for supper.
after breakfast transfer to Mats Rullander’s kennels in Laxforsen where he keeps some 110 Alaskan huskies. Mats and his helpers have an unsurpassed passion for their dogs and the Torne Valley. Mush your own team in pairs stopping en route to swap drivers if you wish. Scandi al fresco lunch before returning to the Reindeer lodge and a valedictory supper.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
