Nyhavn quayside | Copenhagen | ScanAdventures

Your Adventure

A short break holiday in the “Kobmaendenes Havn” (merchant’s harbour) that grew fat as a centre of Baltic trade and is now a city of easy living. Filled with cafes, restaurants, museums, fountains, statues and squares against a theatrical back-drop of copper towers and spires; Copenhagen is the ultimate in laid back cool. The quayside at Nyhavn is a place to see and be seen with outdoor restaurants, boutiques and antique shops, managing to hang on to the genuine charm and authenticity of by-gone days. The city is surrounded by water, sea and canals – the maritime atmosphere is indelible - and at night the centre is illuminated by the glittering lights of Tivoli Gardens.

Hotel D'angleterre

if it’s 18th century elegance you’re after then this is the place. Facing Copenhagen’s Old Square with Nyhavn in front of you and Stroget behind, the hotel’s meticulous attention to detail both with décor, amenities and service puts it in a class apart (5 star class as it happens). Its restaurant Marchal named after one half of the hotel’s founding couple has a Michelin star and The Balthazar bar with its wonderful Francophile décor has champagne by the bucket and a decadent signature cocktail. On top of which the hotel has the city’s only swimming pool.

Hotel Skt Petri

the Sankt Petri is Copenhagen’s uber-cool fashion statement hotel and, whilst voted as such by Conde Naste some time ago, still has what it takes and is the place where Denmark’s A-List hang out. Standard rooms are anything but with white washed walls, dark hard wood floors, elegant earthy tone fabrics and white, white bathrooms. In summer the hotel’s sun deck serves chilled cocktails and chilled towels!, Restaurant Petri opens on to a courtyard garden and the lobby showcases the Bar Rouge, one of Copenhagen’s most exclusive lounges.

The Webers Hotel

On Vestebro just along from Tivoli and a stone’s throw from Stroget, the Webers justifies that truly hackneyed phrase ‘conveniently located’. Visually a little tardis like with a 19th century facade shrouding an edgily minimalist designed interior, the standard rooms come in at around 14sq m with light grey throws, wooden flooring and cream paintwork and the superior extra at 24sq m with a good clutch of room amenities. The summer courtyard is a good place to kick off the evening as is the hotel’s Cube bar if the weather is inclement.

1st Day UK – Copenhagen

fly direct to Copenhagen’s Karstrup airport, transfer by train or taxi to the city centre and check in at your chosen hotel.

2nd Day Copenhagen

the city is a cornucopia overflowing with the old and the new. Latticed with canals the easiest way to cram in as much as you can is to take a cruise from Nyhavn past many of the top things to see. Top of the list is of course the Little Mermaid who despite numerous decapitations still swims to the shore every morning and evening waiting for her Prince. At Amalienborg everybody has their own gaff: Christian VII’s Palace, Christian VIII’s Palace, Frederik VIII’s Palace and Christian IX’s Palace whilst for some reason the jewels are kept out at Rosenborg Castle. Christiana is the hippy community that has long outlived Haight Ashbury’s Summer of Love and comes with its own Pusher Street where the hash dealers ply their trade. For lunch our two favourite places are Ida Davidsen’s where the eponymous Ida still turns out the best smorrebrod in town or its diminutive equivalent Royal Smushi. Out of town (for which you’ll need to stay an extra day) is Louisiana which is a soul embalming spot in gardens littered with Giacometti’s and other works of art overlooking the Oresund Sound, and probably the most famous castle in the world, Kronberg (with apologies to both Shakespeare and Carlsberg). Lastly wherever you want to have dinner make sure you have our Concierge service book you a table in advance; you can’t just walk into Noma!

Copenhagen Bespoke

can be designed to be just that: Copenhagen as you'd like to see and enjoy it, either as a short break, a gateway to Denmark or across the Oresund to Sweden. We use hotels that have a bit of an edge to them rather than ones from a faceless hotel chain. And our experience comes from having been there more times than there are courses on Noma's menu' and a 'phone a friend' living and working in Copenhagen who keeps tabs on what's hot and what's not. Simples.
