After breakfast leave for the geothermal fields of Hellisheidi on top of the Hengil volcano, savour the Geysir geothermal area with its hot springs, fumaroles stained yellow with sulphur and Thykkuhverir, the viscous hot springs; Gullfoss, whose waters flow down a 3 step staircase before plunging in two stages down a crevice at right angles to the flow of the river. Drive past the Bishopric of Skalholt down to and along the south coast past Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss to Vik. Overnight & dinner at Icelandair Hotel Vik.
Drive along the southeast coast with its vast outwash plains forded by bridges and Skeidararsandur, the black sands of the Skeidarsandur glacier before arriving at Skaftafell National Park dominated by Vatnajokull . Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, undoubtedly one of Iceland’s ‘wow factor’ sights before reaching Hofn. Overnight and dinner at Hotel Hofn.
Drive along the still gravelled section of route 1 overhung by rhyolite crags contouring the fjord indented coastline dotted with fishing villages. Overnight & dinner at Hotel Herard.
Vast seemingly endless deserts of glacially crushed rock are the hallmark of the morning before arriving at Dettifoss with its slate grey torrents that are the most powerful in Europe. In the contrastingly lush Lake Mývatn area you’ll see the wooded headland at Hofdi’s wooded headland with its lava pillars; the contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir; the pastel coloured Námafjall ridge with its steamy surroundings and the smouldering, sulphurous Krafla Caldera. Then to Godafoss the ‘waterfall of the Gods’ before arriving in Akureyri. Overnight & dinner at Hotel Akureyri.
After breakfast take a brief orientation tour of Akureyri before setting off through the Öxnadalsheidi pass to Hvammstangi on the Miðfjörður where you can take a short cruise to see seals frolicking in the fjord. Continue and then round to Laugarbakki for a night at Gauksmyri Lodge in the heart of horse breeding country. Overnight & dinner at Hotel Hamar.
drive south alongside the Hrutafjordur and then along the northern side of the Snæfellsness peninsula, dropping in on Stykkishólmur ! Bird watch on Breidafjördur bay; take the car round to the vertiginous bird cliffs at Arnarstapi (the hike between there and Hellnar is beautiful) or climb up on to Snæfellsjökull glacier.
Take the road across to Blönduos and follow the fjord road through some of the country’s most verdant countryside, then through Steingrímsfjardarheidi to Isafjördur for 2 nights at Hotel Isafjördur.

A ScanAdventures Safari that bombards the senses. First stop the landscapes south of Lake Þingvallavatn before the National Park Þingvellir. From there continue to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, with its foaming, thundering waters invariably over-arched with a rainbow. Then to the Geyser area with its spouting water geysers and bubbling mud pots with time for lunch (payable locally). Return to Reykjavík via the cathedral at Skálholt, the extraordinary crater Kerið and the greenhouse community Hveragerði. Hotel pick up at 08.00 on Day of Choice. Tour lasts for 8 1/2 hours. discover some of the south coast’s most iconic scenery on the way across bridges fording dramatic outwash plains interspersed with black sand beaches and lava fields to the Jokulsarlon Lagoon. The Lagoon’s luminous blue icebergs tinted with black volcanic dust float in the Lagoon for several years, gradually self-sculpting themselves in to different shapes before finally working their way out to sea. You’ll take a boat trip amongst them on a DUKW, a mechanical amphibian originating in WW2 which can be driven up on the shore, as well as in the water. Along the way you’ll stop at both Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss, plunge waterfalls dropping off cliffs that once marked the shoreline.
