Hotel Hekla

In the shadow of its eponymous volcano the Hekla has individually furnished rooms with private WC/shower and with an outdoor hot pot in which to soak off the rigours of the day. The hotel has 46 comfortable rooms, all fully equipped with free WI-FI, hair dryers, and satellite TV. There is a choice double, twin, economy triple, single and Loft Deluxe rooms along with family suites sleeping 4-5 people. Apart from its location the two commendations it consistently earns are the unfailing helpfulness of the staff and the kitchen which consistently turns out dishes from local produce bought to it by local farmers.

For ultimate relaxation there is a hot tub available all year round.

1st Day UK – Iceland

Fly to Keflavik International Airport from the UK, collect your hire car at the airport and drive to the Hotel Hekla for a 4-nights stay. Dinner at the hotel.

2nd Day Southern Splendours

Wake up to the drama of, one of Iceland’s most spectacular settings (in a country which has more than its fair share of them) with its variegated flora and fauna latticed with lakes, rivers, steaming craters and bubbling hot springs. After breakfast, drive along the coast (stopping at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss on the way) to Dyrhólaey’s bird cliffs and black sand beaches.

3rd Day Eyarbakki & Stokkseyri

Visit the greenhouse village of Hverageri, a sort of giant geothermally heated garden centre – even the local church has tiny geysers spouting alongside it. Afterwards pop down to the coast and Eyarbakki, a colourful little place with rather more traditional clapboard buildings than the average Icelandic village, and to Stokkesyri where you can round off your day with a plate of lobster in the village’s waterside restaurant.

4th Day Geysir & Gullfoss

After breakfast, drive up to the Geysir area where Strokkur spouts impressively every 5 to 10 minutes, alongside of which there are steaming fumaroles, hot springs and pools, some a dark muddy grey and others a translucent turquoise. Then on to Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before twisting and tumbling down a large gorge. End your day with a visit to Pingvellir, always mystically beautiful but particularly tranquil in late afternoon when the day tour visitors have left, and a soak in the geothermal pool at Laugarvatn.

5th Day Iceland – UK

After breakfast drive along the moss clad lava Reykjanes peninsula to the Blue Lagoon for a valedictory bathe, before dropping your car off at the airport and return flight to UK.

Guide prices are in part based on our mid-level contract air fares which are veriable in real time unlike our ground supplier contract costs which are generally fixed. We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.
