All Our Iceland Holidays
Lake Myvatn's tortuous lava formations | Iceland Holidays
Inspired by Iceland

Your Adventure

A week long adventure holiday, taking in Iceland’s most iconic geoattractions in both north and south of the island. Arranged as what we call an UNTOUR with everything organised by us beforehand, guides when you need them and the freedom to do as you please when you want to.

The South

Skogafoss & Seljalandfoss: Iceland’s most dramatic plunge falls; Dyrholaey: the signature rock arch marking Iceland’s southernmost tip; Jokulsarlon Lagoon with its luminous blue icebergs. Þingvellir; Gullfoss, the eponymous Geyser and volcanic crater Kerið. See them all.

The North

Dominated by Lake Myvatn with its dramatic tortuous lava formations and landscapes so surreal it’s where NASA picked to simulate the moon’s surface. Godafoss, the waterfall that got Christianity going, Dettifoss, the world’s most powerful one, Námaskarð’s mud pits & steaming fumaroles and the Tjorn peninsula. See them all.

Klettur Hotel

just off Laugavegur, the city’s main street, the Klettur is one of Reykjavik’s newest hotels now grown from its inaugaration as modest lodgings to be a 166 room ScanPlus hotel. Styled with a black lava rock motif in the public areas and a biscuit brown and light pine in the bedrooms, the standard rooms are on the first three floors and de-luxe ones on the 2 upper floors with views to the north or south facing balconies. All have private WC/shower, fridge, satellite TV, safe, hairdryer and WI-FI. There is a ground floor breakfast room, lounge with a pool table and evening bar with a range of Icelandic beers.

Hotel Reynihlíð

in Reykjahlid village is the focal point and social hub (such as it is) of the Myvatn area. The hotel has a mix of different room types ranging up to 30m2, some doubles and some twins with a choice of WC/shower or bath tubs, coffee/tea kettle, satellite TV and radio. Pretty much every room has a view of either the mountains or the lake. There is a glazed lobby with views out over the lake, bar and restaurant and just across the road a café cum bar much used by the locals. In the hands of husband & wife Petur Snaebjornsson and Erna Thorarinsdottir as is just along the road from the

Hotel Reykjahlid

further down the road on the other side and as close to the lake as it’s possible to get, with a top floor lounge with views out over the lake. Furnished almost like a private house with canary yellow walls offset by lots of white broderie anglais in the just nine rooms.

1st Day UK – Iceland

Fly to Keflavik International Airport from UK, transfer to and overnight for 3 nights at the Hotel Klettur. (If you fancy a different hotel please check our Brief Encounter City Breaks for alternatives)

2nd Day Gullfoss, Geyser & Laugarvatn

After breakfast begin your day with a journey out through the Þingvellir valley to the Geyser area where Strokkur spouts 40m high every 5 to 10 minutes alongside steaming fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools. Continue to Gullfoss, the ‘golden falls’, where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before torrenting down a large gorge between the Mid Atlantic Ridge’s tectonic plates and then the geothermal fields of Hellisheidi, sitting on top of Hengil volcano. Lastly but not leastly, stop off at Laugarvatn for a geothermal bath in the manner of the locals and a chunk of ‘lava bread’ to keep you going.

3rd Day An Insider’s Reykjavik

Join our local guide Auður on a zig zag tour of the city beginning at Hallgrímskirkja and ending in Austurvöllur square. A veritable mine of information Auður will not only show the parts of Reykjavik others don’t reach but send you on your way for the afternoon with tips and hints as to what else to see.

4th Day Reykjavik to Myvatn

After breakfast catch an early flight to Akuryri and join our local guide for the journey to Myvatn. Travel alongside the Eyjafjordur with its views of Akureyri’s waterside houses, to Godafoss the waterfall of the Gods and the pseudo craters at Skutustadir before Reykjahlid by Lake Myvatn. Check in to and overnight at Hotel Reynihilid.

5th Day Myvatn

savour the raw beauty of this lunar like landscape before meeting your guide again for an afternoon visit to the lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the crater Viti and Hverarond’s bubbling mud pits and multi coloured fumaroles. Then bathe in the opaque white waters of the Nature baths and if you can’t tear yourself away, stay as long as you like and walk back to your hotel.

6th Day Whales or Waterfalls

Choose between a journey east over the Namaskaro Pass to Dettifoss ( claimed to be Europe’s most powerful by people who measure that sort of thing), the 100m deep 25km long Jokulsargljufur Canyon, Vesturdalur and Asbyrgi or go whale watching on Skjalfandafloi Bay from the deck of a carvel built replica trawler.

7th Day Myvatn

Take a walk along the north east side of the Lake to Vogafjoss or the Cow Shed café for possibly the farm freshest breakfast in the world and spend the morning watching the day go by transferring to Akuyeri for the short flight down to Reykjavik and a final night at Hotel Klettur.

8th Day Myvatn -UK

Transfer to Keflavik airport via the mystical Blue Lagoon for a bathe and then to Keflavik airport for your return flight to the UK.
