1st Day UK to Iceland

fly to Keflavik International Airport from UK. Transfer to Reykjavik & check in at the Centerhotel Plaza right in the heart of the city centre. Spend the afternoon & evening as you will, with exclusive discount supper options at restaurants MAR or Kopar.

2nd Day Waterfalls, Geysers & Volcanos

After breakfast meet up with your guide and head for Þingvellir, a fissured rift valley on the north side of a lake which is something of a shrine to Icelanders, it being where they gave up rape and pillage in favour of parliamentary democracy. Savour the Geysir geothermal area with its hot springs, fumaroles stained yellow with sulphur and Thykkuhverir’s viscous hot springs; Gullfoss, whose waters flow down a 3 step staircase before plunging in two stages down a crevice at right angles to the flow of the river. Drive past the Bishopric of Skalholt to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Centre where you’ll hear about the 2010 eruption from a Vulcanologist, and then down to and along the south coast past Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss. Continue across vast outwash plains to Kirkjubæjarklaustur where you’ll have dinner and overnight at Hotel Nupar.

3rd Day Glaciers & Icebergs

Today cross the vast Eldhraun Lava Field, the Earth’s largest mass of lava en-route to Skaftafell National Park. Skaftafell is an oasis of birch, rowan and willow peppered with garden angelica, wild angelica and sea pea sheltered by surrounding glaciers. Drive alongside the Vatnajökull glacier before arriving at the Jökulsarlón Glacier lagoon where you’ll take a boat tour amongst the Lagoon’s Icebergs. The Lagoon’s luminous blue icebergs tinted with black volcanic dust float in the Lagoon for several years gradually self-sculpting themselves into different shapes before finally drifting their way out to sea. Continue along the East Coast with its dramatic fjord indented coastline and picturesque fishing villages including Höfn and Djúpivogur. Overnight at Hotel Blafell in the in Breiðdalsvík area.

4th Day Lava Deserts, Bubbling Mud Pits & Whale Watching

Leaving Breiðdalsvík you journey through the highland Plateau Möðrudalsöræfi, a vast seemingly endless desert of glacially crushed rock, before stopping at Dettifoss, with its dishwater grey torrent and the somewhat forgotten Selfoss with its wide curtain fall. Stop at Námaskarð’s bubbling sulphur mud-pits and steaming vents before heading to Akureyri and the Kea Hotel for 2 nights. After dinner there is an optional whale safari in Eyjafjörður with chances to see White Beaked Dolphin, Sei, Minke, Northern Bottlenose, Fin and Blue Whales.

5th Day The Magic of Myvatn

Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake in a dramatic landscape dominated by volcanic landforms such as pseudo craters and lava pillars. Time to explore the extraordinary scenery and wildlife in the area: the wooded headland at Hofdi with its lava pillars; contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir; the pastel coloured Námafjall ridge with its steamy surroundings and the smouldering, sulphurous Krafla caldera. Stop at Goðafoss Waterfall before returning to Akureyri.

6th Day Akuyeri to Snæfellsnes

Drive through the Oxnadalsheidi Pass to the heart of horse breeding country: the Icelandic horse comes in an extraordinary array of colours ranging from chestnut, dun, bay, black, gray, palomino, pinto and roan. Visit the Folk museum which is located in a traditional turf farmhouse at Glaumbaer by Skagafjordur before continuing through Hunavatnssyslur to Stykkisholmur and its eponymously named hotel.

7th Day The Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Drive around the Snæfellsnes peninsula whose kaleidoscopally coloured mountain spine is dominated at its end by a glacier that was the inspiration for Jules Verne’s ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’; visit Arnarstapi with its basalt rocks, rock arches and bird cliffs and Breiðafjörður Bay with its puffins and white tailed eagles.
