Couple lunching on fresh lobster at a restaurant on Oslo's Bryggen

The Adventure

hospitality at two of Norway’s legendary family owned hotels taking in the western skerry littered coast, blue fjords, emerald green lakes, white tipped mountains and with each day capped by sumptuous evening buffets.

lying at the eastern end of Norfjorden the tiny village of Loen is flanked by majestic mountains and close by the Kjendal glacier, an arm of Jostedalsbreen the largest in Europe.

sitting on a promontory overlooking the Sognefjord the village was popularised by 19th (on the other side of the fjord you can somewhat unexpectedly run into a statue of the Kaiser!) The village is dominated by the Kviknes a family run hotel one of whose female antecedents built the Anglican St. Olaf’s Church.

The Kviknes Hotel

still owned and run by descendants of the founding family the Kviknes overlooks the Sognefjord and from the tiny village of Balestrand and was originally popularised in the 19th c by European aristocracy, Scottish fishermen and painters who came for the magnificent light reflected on the fjord. Our rooms are in the historic Swiss style part of the building each with their own balcony and individually styled fabrics, furnishings and period furniture. The hotel’s restaurant overlooks the fjord and our guests are seated by the window; you can have afternoon tea or coffee after dinner in the period part of the building facing down across manicured gardens to the fjord’s edge.

Hotel Alexandra

the somewhat functional exterior belies its interior which still has a period feel to it carefully nurtured by members of the Grov family, one or other of whom are always around keeping a loving eye on things and it’s their care and attention that makes this a gem. Surrounded by landscaped gardens looking out over an emerald green lake, the views, whether of mountain or lake, are very special. Our rooms are Medium or above to guarantee a fjord view and give you plenty of room (up to 35sq m) during your stay. There is an indoor heated pool and outdoor pool and two restaurants.
