The Adventure

A 4 Day holiday high up over the Arctic Circle at Camp Tamok close by Norway's Tromso in the Vass Valley sleeping in either a Sami lavvu, open plan log cabin or private aurora cabin under a trillion star studded night sky. Camp Tamok nestles in the foothills of the Lyngen Alps, the brainchild of Tor,Tom & Roar (Nystad, Frode & Nyheim), where with their snowmobiles, huskies and reindeer they take you safariing like a Sami. Not forgetting of course, maxing out your chances of seeing the Northern Lights in the middle of the Aurora Arc.

What’s Special?

the quiet snow, empty vastness, the Lyngen Alps soaring peaks, and clear dark nights that show a trillion more stars than you’d ever see from a city, and being right bang in the middle of what’s known as the Aurora Arc; the latitudinal span either side of the Arctic Circle. And for R & R Tromso is a Uni city with a mix of traditional weatherboard buildings and uber modern ones such as the Arctic Cathedral and Polaria Museum, lots of fun bars and restaurants with seafood to die for.

Our Plus

We use only local guides; people like Marcus and Magne for Aurora spotting, Gulli for cruising on Tromso Sound, Francesco for a night in the Lyngen Alps and Tor,Tom & Roar for snow safaris. We kit you out with a windproof, water resistant thermal suit with inner and outer pockets and hood; non-slip Arctic boots with removable inner pocket, deer flapped tight knit wool hat and wool lined leather gloves. And our Safaris are with small groups, typically no more than 16 people tops.

Camp Tamok

Eclectic is the word for this wilderness centre about an hour and a half from Tromso’s city centre in a spot in the Vass valley with a 'dry as a bone' micro climate well away from even a smidgen of urban lighting. Boss man Hans-Olav Eriksen, Tor, Tom and Roar Nyheim are as mixed a bunch as you will find. When he’s not ‘bossing’ Hans-Olav is a surgeon; Tor Vidar Nystad is a snow scooter king; Tom Frode Johansen looks after his own pack of huskies and Roar Nyheim is a Norwegian Sami reindeer herder. This very communal enterprise has a 12 person log cabin with reindeer skin covered bunks, a traditional Sami lavvu (tent) and three private aurora cabins for those who want to snuggle up in a bed right under a north facing window and catch the Northern Lights. Then there is a Sami herdsman’s tent with an open fire around which sooty coffee is on tap and reindeer stew brewed, and around and about huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles.

The Edge Hotel

on the edge of the harbour, with an edgy design and (probably) on the edge of displacing the Ishavshotel as the luxiest hotel in Tromso (enough puns), the Edge is the place for some serious tlc after the rigours of a day on safari, or a night out spotting the Northern Lights. Our upper level rooms have serious views out to the ocean or the mountains, are a good 24sq m with stylish charcoal grey, arctic blue, aurora green or fire red fabrics and furnishings. Perfectly located for our airport transfer & safaris pick up/drop off point and Storgata if you want some retail therapy at any point. Clients rave about the breakfast: the local produce used, the menu and the chef staffed waffle station.

1st Day UK – Tromso

fly direct to Tromso in Northern Norway, transfer to the city centre and check in at the Hotel Edge

2nd Day Tromso – Camp Tamok

take breakfast in your hotel and discover the city made famous originally as a trading port for hunters and trappers, then as the starting point for Amundsen, Nobile & Nansen’s expeditions to the North Pole. Begin your adventure on the Fjellheisen cable car which whisks you to the top of Mount Storsteinen more than 400 metres above the city for a gob smacking panoramic view of the city and its adjacent islands. Take a light lunch at the middle station’s Fjellstua Café before the 4 minute ride back down to the Arctic Cathedral start point. (If you’re feeling more energetic you can take an early morning husky safari). At around 5 o’clock transfer out to Camp Tamok (a commune of Sami tents and hospitality cabin) for a snowmobile safari along a 15km trail through the Finn Valley up to frozen Lake Tamok where you can try your hand at ice fishing. Drive as a pair and swap round half way with each person having a go at driving. The contrast between tundra, lake, and mogul like terrain provides the ultimate snowmobile experience from speeding to crawling. Round off the evening with a hot meal by an open fire in nomadic Sami style before sleeping under the stars in a communal Lavvu, 4 room cabin or private Aurora cabin.

3rd Day Camp Tamok - Tromso

Warm up with a breakfast and then get ready to try the oldest form of Arctic transport reindeer sledding (the husky is an alien import) along a trail crossing the Tamok Valley. Driving in pairs you can swap round half way. A hot meal round an open fire in nomadic Sami style is served en-route with some lasso throwing and tales of Sami culture thrown in. Transfer back to Tromso for a final night at the Hotel Edge and (we suggest) a valedictory dinner at Anne Brit Andreessen’s ‘Emma’s Drommekjokken which dishes up grilled scallops with parmesan, pepper-roasted king crab, cod Carpaccio, whale sushi, reindeer fillet and the like. Their gastronome meal runs to 5 or 6 courses and is a surprise menu based on what’s good in the markets that day.

4th Day Tromso - UK

Check out of your hotel late morning and transfer to Langnes airport for your return flight back to the UK.
