Meet up in the early evening with your guide & escort for the week. Optional evening excursion on the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for a walk on one of the many marked paths with breathtaking views out across the fjord.

2nd Day Bergen - Hardangerfjord

After breakfast enjoy a guided sightseeing tour starting with the gabled facade of Bryggen behind whose touristy boutiques are the old Hanseatic Merchants’ quarters with a clutch of buildings that have survived numerous fires and justifiably constitute a UNESCO heritage site. At one end of the harbour is the bustling fish market with everything from caviar to whole fish on sale and which is a good place to have a small lunch box made up on the spot. Leave in the afternoon for the Hardangerfjord known as the Orchard of Norway because of its fertile rim and the orchards. Overnight at Hotel Sandven right on the Hardangerfjord's edge.

3rd Day Norheimsund - Hardanger

After breakfast your day's sight filled journey begins with a drive alongside the fjord to Granvin before turning up into the mountains past Vossvangen to Stalheim with its spectacular view down the Nærøydalen Valley. Follow the 13 bend serpentine road past Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls down to Flam for a 2 hour cruise by shallow draft ferry along the Aurlandsfjorden and round into the Naeroyfjorden at the head of which lies the diminutive village of Gudvangen (pop120). Hop from boat to bus continuing to Vangsnes and then from bus to boat again for the sailing across the Sognefjorden, Norway's longest and deepest whose panoramic width contrasts with the Naeroyfjorden &Aurlandsfjorden's 'touch the sides' narrowness to Balestrand. Disembark for dinner and a night at the Kviknes Hotel.

4th Day The Jostedal Glacier

After breakfast board the Fjærlandsfjord ferry and sail along the fjord with its vertiginous sides to the fjord's head where glacier melt water meets the fjord and gives it its green colouring. The Jostedal Glacier. the largest on the European mainland, is a staggering colossus of a glacier which you can get 'up close & personal' with just 40 minutes from where you land. Take lunch at the Norsk Glacier Museum and discover glacier secrets: why the ice is blue yet the fjord green; how were glaciers formed; are they retreating or expanding. Find brilliant filmic answers with a virtual helicoptor ride across the Jostedal with film director Ivo Caprino. Sail back to Balestrand.

5th Day Balestrand - Flam - Oslo

Cross the Sognefjorden to Flam and catch the eponymous mountain railway which ascends 867 metres above sea level to the mountain station at Myrdal which lies on the main rail line from Bergen to Oslo, As your train climbs up the valley alongside the Raller road at a gradient of 1 in 20 past rivers cutting through deep ravines and snow-capped mountains with abandoned farms clinging to their sides and melt water waterfalls plunging from their peaks. At Myrdal board the Bergensbanen for the journey across the Hardangervidda plateau to Oslo. Overnight at Scandic St Olav's Plass.

6th Day Oslo Sightseeing

After breakfast enjoy a 3 hour sightseeing tour of the city known as the Viking Capital; take in the panoramic view of Oslo fjord from the Holmenkollen ski-jump, see Gustaf Vigeland's Sculpture Arrangement (Vigelandsanlegget) in Frogner Park with its centrepiece 120 figure Monolith and walk (sic) on the roof of the Opera House. Afterwards there's more for you to explore on your own: look the haunting image of Edvard Munch’s Scream in the eye at the National Gallery; take in the Viking Ship Museum, Nansen’s Fram or the open air Folk Museums on Bygdøy or hjust hang out down by Aker Brygge.
