All Our Norway Holidays
The Seven Sisters Waterfall in the Geirangerfjord

The Adventure

a rail journey along Norway’s mountain spine, through the Dovre National Park to the unique art nouveau city of Alesund, a day in the precipitously rock faced Geirangerfjord and passage by Coastal steamer along Norway’s coastline to Bergen. Oslo belies its somewhat stuffy reputation with a plethora of cafes, bars and eateries along with testimony to its Viking heritage at the Viking ship museum. Alesund is an architectural monument to the Jugendstil movement with medieval ornamentation on every gabled corner after being rebuilt in its entirety after fire gutted the port  at the turn of the 19th centuryand .Geirangerfjord is the ultimate ‘does what it says on the tin’ fjord with vertical rock faced walls to which abandoned farmstead buildings still cling and off which melt water spills to creat decorative rainbows.

The Grims Grenka

is an exception to the designer hotel genre, somewhere designed with the notion of an ambience for guests rather than the designer: and comfort, comfort, comfort. All 65 rooms are larger than 20m2 with Jensen beds ( pop down to Selfridge’s and try one out), Bang & Olufsen TV, personalized light controls which you can use without a degree from MIT and lots of other goodies. And if the weather’s good during your stay, the hotel has a roof lounge bar where you can grab a night cap.

The Kviknes Hotel

still owned and run by descendants of the founding family the Kviknes overlooks the Sognefjord and from the tiny village of Balestrand and was originally popularised in the 19th c by European aristocracy, Scottish fishermen and painters who came for the magnificent light reflected on the fjord. Our rooms are in the historic Swiss style part of the building each with their own balcony and individually styled fabrics, furnishings and period furniture. The hotel’s restaurant overlooks the fjord and our guests are seated by the window; you can have afternoon tea or coffee after dinner in the period part of the building facing down across manicured gardens to the fjord’s edge.

Hotel Marin

set on the Bryggen quayside alongside Bergen’s old harbour the Marin is a touch of class in a perfect location Superior rooms are invariably styled in primrose yellow and sea blue with mahogany headboards and wing back patterned chairs. Lots of open brick work in the public areas gives everywhere a maritime warehouse look and feel including in the restaurant where breakfast is served. Everything you need to see and do here is literally on your doorstep.

The Brosundet

Hoteliers Knut and Line Flakk's Brosundet, whose interiors were designed by Snøhetta the architects who gave the world the Oslo Opera House, is a class act in every sense of the word. Meticulously crafted from a warehouse building in the old port from which it takes its name, the hotel is a prefect example of function meets form with greys, blacks and browns used to offset the exposed timber beams in both the public areas and bedrooms. The rustic maritime theme is carried through with different fabrics and materials elegantly contrasting with the wet shower rooms loaded with Bulgari. Alongside the water's edge this is the place to stay in Alesund; an Art Nouveau restoration to match an Art Nouveau city. Idiosyncraticly, room 47 is 5 minutes away from the other 46, in Molja Lighthouse at the end of a nearby jetty.
