The Adventure

An 11 day Fly Drive Road Trip holiday exploring the contrasts between three of Norway’s great fjords:the fertile Hardangerfjord, majestic Sognefjord and vertiginous sided Geiranger. Between the three you'll take in vast mountain plateaus;white topped glaciers;emerald green lakes, hanging waterfalls and a kaleidoscopic mix of fjord Norway’s most dramatic sights. Your ultimate Norway Road Trip comes topped off with time in Alesund and its Art Nouveau old town complete with turrets, gargoyles, spires, dragon's heads and medieval ornamentation. And along the way you'll rest up at some of Norway's most splendid gaffs with hospitality from the Utne, Kviknes and Grov families.

The Kviknes Hotel

still owned and run by descendants of the founding family the Kviknes overlooks the Sognefjord and from the tiny village of Balestrand and was originally popularised in the 19th c by European aristocracy, Scottish fishermen and painters who came for the magnificent light reflected on the fjord. Our rooms are in the historic Swiss style part of the building each with their own balcony and individually styled fabrics, furnishings and period furniture. The hotel’s restaurant overlooks the fjord and our guests are seated by the window; you can have afternoon tea or coffee after dinner in the period part of the building facing down across manicured gardens to the fjord’s edge.

Hotel Alexandra

the somewhat functional exterior belies its interior which still has a period feel to it carefully nurtured by members of the Grov family, one or other of whom are always around keeping a loving eye on things and it’s their care and attention that makes this a gem. Surrounded by landscaped gardens looking out over an emerald green lake, the views, whether of mountain or lake, are very special. Our rooms are Medium or above to guarantee a fjord view and give you plenty of room (up to 35sq m) during your stay. There is an indoor heated pool and outdoor pool and two restaurants.

Hotel Park

less a hotel, more a home from home, the Park being in 2 one time residential buildings and family run by Anne Margrethe Klohs. The 35 rooms are all individually designed and furnished with an effortless elegance that throws together antiques, contemporary art and modern design in an eclectic mix only somebody with an eye can pull off. Little touches like homemade brownies being on tap in the evening and tea and coffee throughout the day all augment the feeling of staying with friends for the weekend. Further from the harbour than our other hotels but ideal if you want something a little different in a quit location.

The Brosundet

Hoteliers Knut and Line Flakk's Brosundet, whose interiors were designed by Snøhetta the architects who gave the world the Oslo Opera House, is a class act in every sense of the word. Meticulously crafted from a warehouse building in the old port from which it takes its name, the hotel is a prefect example of function meets form with greys, blacks and browns used to offset the exposed timber beams in both the public areas and bedrooms. The rustic maritime theme is carried through with different fabrics and materials elegantly contrasting with the wet shower rooms loaded with Bulgari. Alongside the water's edge this is the place to stay in Alesund; an Art Nouveau restoration to match an Art Nouveau city. Idiosyncraticly, room 47 is 5 minutes away from the other 46, in Molja Lighthouse at the end of a nearby jetty.

1st Day UK - Bergen

Fly to Bergen on Norway's west coast, pick up your hire car and drive to the city centre. Stay the night at Hotel Park. (If you arrive of a weekend there may have to be some jigging around as to when & where you pick up your car; it sometimes being better to collect it in Bergen when in which case we provide an airport/hotel transfer).

2nd Bergen - Lofthus

After breakfast take the funicular for a view of Bergen from Mount Floyen; poke around the winding streets of Old Bergen and pick up your lunch at the Fish Market. Then around lets say mid-afternoon, drive out of the city and alongside the Hardangerfjord, over the Sørfjorden suspension bridge and south to the village of Lofthus. Stay for two nights at Hotel Ullensvang. Buffet supper:lamb, veal, goat, deer, reindeer, mountain fish, seafood and berries based on the Hardanger Menu

3rd Day The Hardangerfjord

Start with breakfast overlooking the fjord and the Folgefonna Glacier whilst contemplating your day. You can walk the 'Monk's Walk' up on top of the Hardangervidda Plateau; take the Heritage Trail in Sysehagen or a short fjord cruise round to the Eidfjord and stepping ashore for a trip to Vøringsfossen. Or just watch the day go by.

4th Day Lofthus-Voss

Lol about in the morning before making the short drive up the mountain road past Skjervefoss waterfall to Voss. Stay for 2 nights at Fleischers Hotel.

5th Day Norway in a Nutshell

Take breakfast in your hotel before a day out from driving. Catching the train for Myrdal from just behind your hotel, ride the mountain railway down to Flam, cruise on the steep rock sided Aurlandfjord and Naeroyfjords, then by bus up to Stalheim and back to Voss on the Bergensbanen. All in all about 8 hours of what tourist offices call 'Norway in a Nutshell'.

6th Day Voss - Balestrand

Drive across the Vik Mountains, down to Vik itself stopping off at Hopperstad Stave Church, cross the Sognefjord by ferry to Dragsvik and drive round to Balestrand for two nights at the Hotel Kviknes. Buffet Supper in the hotel.

7th Day The Sognefjord

Balestrand is pretty much Norway’s 'Jewel in the Crown’ and you could do worse than just wander round the village, peek inside the small but perfectly formed St Olaf's Anglican Church and just hang out. But if you can tear yourself away, take a trip up to the Fjaerland Glacier or drive along to Solvorn and Urnes Stave Church. Supper in your hotel.

8th Day Balestrand – Loen

Take breakfast and then follow a route over the Gaular and Rørvik Mountains and down the serpentine descent to Moskog; alongside the emerald green waters of Lake Jølster by Skei, and pop into Astruptunet before continuing past the Briksdal Galcier to the village of Loen. Stay for two nights at the Hotel Alexandra.

9th Day Loen

Loen is a place for some R & R. Just catch the day go by in the Hotel's pool or if you can't stay still take a trip to the little known Kjendal Glacier (inaccessible to buses so just somehere locals go for an afternoon walk).

10th Day Loen – Alesund

Drive to Hellesylt;cruise down the vertiginous sided Geirangerfjord with its spectacular waterfalls;follow the tortuous, serpentine road up to Dalsnibba for some of Norway's most gob smacking views and then to Alesund. For a bit of added edge between Hjelle and Sunnmore you can drive through the Sunnmore mountains taking the so called ‘shelf road’ where en route you can take in the Isflamannen the ‘saluting’ mountain that spouts hot water in late summer. Stay two nights at Hotel Brosundet.

11th Day Alesund

After breakfast start your day with a trip up to the top of Mount Aksla and the Fjellstua viewing point for the postcard view of the port and surrounding Fjords. Then drop back into town and soak yourself in the asymmetrical shapes, gargoyles, plant like motifs, spouting dragons in this living museum of Art Deco or Jugendstil architecture.
