Hotel Marina

With a ship’s prow overlooking the hotel’s entrance ( the last time we visited), a gob smacking array of colours and patchwork fabrics, slatted wood pillars, overhead trunking and barrel top tables the Marina instantly impresses you as different with a capital D. The public area runs virtually the whole length of the hotel with a bar, seated alcoves, a 24/7 canteen style restaurant with an edgy take on locally sourced ingredients, a TV Cinema and Boiler Room Gym. The hotel has just over a 100 rooms all with an edgy, maritime and a minimalist design style with added chic. Standard rooms have a double bed, telephone, flat screen TV, WI-FI and hairdryer. There are also Studio rooms for 4 and 6 people, unique ‘Attic’ rooms and a two large (48 & 67 sq. metres!)

1st Day UK - Iceland

Fly to Keflavik International Airport from your chosen UK airport, collect your hire car on arrival and drive north by Reykjavik through the tunnel under the Hvalfjörð and then to Reykholt to the eponymous Hotel Husafell. Check in and take dinner. On average Husafell has three aurora sightings week and there is an automated automated Northern Lights wake-up-call service.

2nd Day Snaefellsnes

After breakfast set off for the day circumscribing Snaefellsnes which juts out in to the Atlantic with its northern and southern shorelines divided by a mountain spine and culminating in a glacier at its tip. Modest by Icelandic standards its beauty and fame are known for having been christened a 'pyramid of eternal snow' by Lord Dufferin in his comic travelogue Letters from High Altitudes. As you travel round the Peninsula as well as the glacier you can take in Kirkjufell Mountain, Arnarstapi, Vatnshellir Cave, Black Sand beaches, Djúpalónssandur beach, Gerðuberg Basalt Columns, Berserker lava field and Kirkjufellsfoss.

3rd Day Under the Glacier

Today brings one of the the highlight notes of your holiday: driving up on to the top of an Ice Cap in a huge 8 wheeled Leviathan of a truck before descending down in to it; one of the few places in the world where it's posssible to do so. Here you'll enter an eeerily translucent blue ice world of man mad corridors culminating in a crevice festooned with stalactites and stalagmites. Once suitably overawed your truck takes you safely back down the glacier for dinner at the hotel.

4th Day The Golden Circle

After breakfast take Iceland's legendary Golden Circle Route. First up is the Geyser area where Strokkur spouts every 5 to 10 minutes alongside steaming fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools. From here snowmobile up on to the Langjökull glacier for an hour long adrenaline pumping snowmobile tour on the vast white snowcap, the second largest in Iceland. From there to Gullfoss (the ‘golden falls’ from which the route takes its name) where the glacial river Hvítá plummets 32 metres before its waters foam white and tumble down a large gorge between the Mid Atlantic Ridge’s tectonic plates. Then through the Þingvellir Valley with its glass flat lake and past the Alþingi where the early Icelandic settlers gave up rape and pillage in favour of parliamentary democracy before heading for Reykjavik. Overnight at Hotel Marina or similar
