Gota Canal Steamers lifting up the 7 locks at Berg by Lake Roxen

The Adventure

Cruising on the Gota Canal in the stately manner of 19th century aristocracy on a meticulously maintained steamer sailing across the country’s lakes, canals and viaducts set against a tapestry of Sweden's exquisite pastoral beauty.

The Steamers

the Juno, Wilhelm Tham & Diana the oldest dating from 1874 but all meticulously maintained down the years. Although slightly ‘tubby’ in appearance each is the epitome of elegance internally with 3 decks including a Bridge Deck and mahogany faced dining room saloon.

The Cabins

more akin to an Orient Express compartment than conventional ship’s cabin, each has a hand basin with loo and shower in the adjacent corridor. Differences in price category reflect height above the waterline and amount of natural light rather than facilities.

Gota Kanal Steamers

cabins are small and perfectly formed with traditional mahogany fixtures and fittings set off with chintz fabrics. Most have bunk beds (one or two have double beds) and each has a hand basin with WC and shower in the adjacent corridor. All are above the waterline with either a port hole or window; bridge and shelter deck cabins open out onto the deck.

Miss Clara

on Sveavagen which dissects Norrmalm bang in the middle of the city, Miss Clara is the newest hotel from hospitality group Nobis. The rooms with their herringbone parquet framing the bed heads and on the floor, limestone bathroom surfaces, 'Bed Factory' beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, give Stockholm Syndrome a whole new meaning. Of course they’re also fitted out with everything you’d expect from a Nobis hotel, and the toiletries by Orla Kiely, bathrobes and slipper just add to the very special feel of the place.

1st Day UK - Sweden (Gothenburg)

fly to Gothenburg’s Landvetter airport and transfer to the city centre. Stay the night at the Elite Plaza (or similar). You shouldn’t pass through Goteborg without trying out a fish supper; Fiskekrogen along with Salt & Sill are our favourites.

2nd Day Gothenburg & Cruising on Gota Canal

breakfast in your hotel, transfer to Packhuskajen and board your steamer. Sail north to Lilla Edet and on to Trollhättan, a staircase of locks lifting you 32 metres. Step ashore for a walk through the exquisitely beautiful old lock area. At around 6 o’clock, pass by Vänersborg and sail onto and across the vast expanse of Lake Vanern.

3rd Day Cruising on Gota Canal

take breakfast passing through the 4 locks at Godhögen and, if you fancy stretching your legs, walk alongside the canal to Hajstorp. At lunchtime an unmissable Obelisk marks the highest point of the Canal, after which you sail acros Lake Viken before passing through a section of canal with wood lined passages and small, water lily covered lakes. At Forsvik you begin a descent with the Kindholm family waving you on your way with flowers and songs. In the early evening you pass into the waters of Lake Vattern before arriving in Motola where you tie up for the night.

4th Day Cruising on Gota Canal

take breakfast whilst crossing a main road aquaduct, the first of two in the canal. Just before lunch the ship passes through the Carl-Johan lock staircase, the longest in the canal with seven connected locks. Whilst your steamer is being carried down the staircase visit the Convent Vreta, Sweden’s fist Nunnery and still a parish church. Alternatively walk alongside the canal or take a swim in Lake Roxen and then re-board to sail across Lake Roxen. After crossing the main Stockholm and Malmö railway line via Norsholm lock, sail across Lake Asplånge before the 8 lock staircase taking you down to Söderköping which you can explore after supper.

5th Day Cruising & Stockholm

wake up whilst crossing Lake Mälaren, the third of Sweden’s great lakes. Stop first at the Birka Heritage site established as trading post in Viking times and step ashore for a guided tour of the island. Then back on board to sail past the 17th century Drottningholm Castle with its French baroque Park and Renaissance sculptures before catching sight of the very 20th century Ericsson Globe, the world’s largest spherical building. Pass through your very last lock at Hammarby and into Saltsjön before arriving at Gamla Stan. Catch a cab to the Hotel Clara or walk across the quayside to the First Hotel Reisen.

6th Day Sweden - UK

Unless you decide to stay over for an extra night or more, we suggest you take a guided walking tour of the Stockholm’s Old Town before transferring to the airport for your return flight to the UK. (In fact if you have the time, whether staying longer or not, we’ll throw in the tour free, gratis and for nothing).

We don’t do fancy lead in prices and the time you confirm your booking always use the lowest air fare available. This may mean the confirmed price of your holiday being slightly less or more than the guide price in which case a proportionate reduction-supplement will apply. Carpe Diem = the earlier you book the better, especially for public & school holidays.

Bespoke Gota Kanal Holidays

mahogany faced twin cabin on M/S Diana | Gota Canal Holidays

The itinerary featured here is our most popular book ended with nights in Goteborg and Stockholm. If  you want to stay longer in either city, then our Adventure Designers will happily add that, upgrade your hotel or extend your holiday. Bespoke is what we do and the Gota Canal can be either a holiday in itself or part of a longer Swedish Adventure.
