Royal Palace in Stockholm's Old Town | ScanAdventures

Your Stockholm Brief Encounter

The city once described by author Selma Lagerlöf as floating on water with its intricate lattice of canals, Hanseatic buildings piled up on Gamla Stan, futuristic Eriksson Globe and every architectural style in between is Scandi perfect. The Old Town with the Royal Palace, Finnish Church, Stockholm Cathedral, Bollhustäppan with Olle the country's smallest statue, Market Square and German Church is a must see, as is the Vasa warship museum for a dose of maritime culture, and Vetakatten for the cinnamon bun to end all cinnamon buns. If you need retail therapy Ostermalm is designer label country and Södermalm the Camden Market of Stockholm. And on your doorstep are the 24,000 islands of the archipelago with an armada of boats ready to take you out for an hour, a day or anything in between.

The ScanAdventures Plus

A walking tour of Stockholm’s legendary Old Town sitting on the island of Stadsholmen (the city is built on 27 of them) and which is a jumble of cobbled streets, vaulted cellars and Hanseatic merchant’s buildings packed with cafes, bars and handicraft shops. Everything radiates out from Stortorget the main square overlooked by the domes of Riddarholm Church the one remaining medieval abbey in Stockholm. Our guide walks you through some 800 years of history with a sprig of levity on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday at 2pm.

Miss Clara

on Sveavagen which dissects Norrmalm bang in the middle of the city, Miss Clara is the newest hotel from hospitality group Nobis. The rooms with their herringbone parquet framing the bed heads and on the floor, limestone bathroom surfaces, 'Bed Factory' beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, give Stockholm Syndrome a whole new meaning. Of course they’re also fitted out with everything you’d expect from a Nobis hotel, and the toiletries by Orla Kiely, bathrobes and slipper just add to the very special feel of the place.

Hotel Reisen

A classic hotel dating back to the 18th century famed for its unique location on the water's edge in Gamla Stan (The Old Town). A special feature here is the sauna on the hotel's top floor from where you have staggering views out over the city. All 144 rooms are elegantly furnished with trad drapes, mahogony wood facings and lots of exposed brick work lending everything a maritime feel. Each has a private WC/shower/bath, TV, mini bar, telephone, hair dryer and safe.

Elite Plaza

on Birger Jarlsgatan just across from Humlegården and close to Stureplan the Elite Plaza is an eclectic design mix of original 19th century features and classy contemporary ones. Fabrics and furnishing in all the rooms have a snazzy feel to them pairing cerise and grey, primrose yellow and beige, turqoise and walnut. The bathrooms have vessels sinks, designer tiling and wet showers. There are 5 room categories with the standard category all being on the second floor and having double beds, private WC/shower, mini bar, hairdryer, safe, bathrobes & Penhaligon toiletries.

Hotel Lydmar

Overlooking Salt Lake, the Lydmar has been remodelled by Swedish hotelier and serial entrepeneur Pelle Lydmar (Strandvägen 1, Eataly Stockholm and Archipelag Restaurant Fejan) and is owned by the Grand Hotel, whose Spa is just around the corner and available for our guests. The description boutique is perhaps over worked and a tad passé, but the architectural and design style here is best described as just that. The 47 rooms are all very different one from another with an eclectic mix of contemporary and classic fabrics, furnishings and Italian bed linen. Room amenities include flatscreen TV with international channels; minibar; free bottled water; Nespresso coffee machine with free capsules; bespoke bath products by Azzi. We like that the staff wear what they feel good in rather than a uniform, and take pride in knowing their city.

fly direct to Arlanda airport from your closest UK airport; high speed train transfer to the city centre and then self transfer to your selected hotel.

2/3/4th Day Stockholm

With its unique blend of enchantment, sophistication and the uber-cool, Stockholm is on a par with anywhere. The city spreads over 12 islands linked by a lattice of bridges and viaducts and has more ‘hoods’ than New York: Södermalm a one time working class area now achingly trendy, Östermalm where wealth and glitz ooze from everything especially around Stureplan party central for the glamour-seeking, fashion-conscious Stockholmer; Djurgården a lush green island in part a shrine to Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking; Kungsholmen with its red brick golden minaret topped Stadshuset. You’ll come across brown limbed women indulging in Fika sipping lattes with saffron buns, ice cream parlours and creperies wedged between the Old Town’s red, orange and vanilla stuccoed walled buildings and of course the maritime playground that’s the Stockholm Archipelago.

Our Stockholm City Breaks are beyond ordinary: more like Brief Encounters with an inside edge. We'll tell you where to see the best view of the city (Hermans Markisen);where to get the most amazing Sämlor (Östermalms Saluhall) and which Metro station has the best murals (Kungsträdgården). Where to go in the archipelago;why Uppsala is worth the train ride and why you should see the Vasa. All designed by Ulrika Andersson who keeps tabs on what's hot and what's not.
